Hi Dorothy We have just checked our Kellys for 1915 on the offchance there were some Gilley/Gilly families still around the area and have found the following: GILLEY Ernest 93, Ludlow Road Itchen Southampton GILLIES George 31 Fanshawe St Southampton GILLIES George 248 Shirley Road Freemantle Southampton Hope these help out in some way Chris and Caroline ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy Morrissey" <mamouse56@yahoo.co.nz> To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 26, 2003 7:09 AM Subject: [HantsLife] Where did he go? Okay, Hampshire folk - you were so helpful with my Anna Eliza query I would like to throw another persistent frustration at you and see if anyone can come up with anything. Once again, we swap from GILLEY to GILLY whenever the wind blows. My ancestor's birth certificate shows him as William Amos West GILLY, born 2 Nov 1875, Southampton. 1881 census has him as Amos GILLEY, aged 5, born Southampton. By 1891 he has advanced ten years with other details correct. So far so good. (I presume his being known as Amos was to distinguish him from his older brother, also called William.) After that - pouf! he disappears. However, in November 1900 when Amos should be 25, Elias William GILLEY, aged 30, suddenly appears and marries Eleanor DACAM in Southampton. His occupation is given as "Clerk in Holy Orders". His father is shown as having the same name and occupation. Witnesses are both from the Dacam family, which makes me wonder if he was estranged from his own family. Elias and Eleanor show up on the 1901 census, with his birthplace shown as Surrey. However, nowhere else does any Elias GILLEY appear, of either generation. Not on FreeBMD or any census that I have seen, plus I have searched the BMDs to no avail. All the William GILLEYs of the appropriate age on the censuses are accounted for. Therefore I am left with the situation where my Amos disappears round about when this Elias appears. Did he falsify his name and age to take up holy orders? Would proof of identity be required for this occupation? I have also come across an entry from the London Gazette in 1917 which says that Reverend Elias William Gilley was appointed to the Rectory of St Mary in the Island of Jersey. Will check out that one on the Channel Islands list. Ideas, anyone? Hopefully somebody can see something I have missed. All suggestions gratefully received, thank you. Message From: "Chris & Caroline" To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> UPDATES: CALSHOT has now been added to the list ~~~~~~~~~ This was most interesting - thankyou, Chris. Only went there a couple of times as a child & thought it was a dreadful hole - bleak & ugly - not realising the huge historic significance of the place. Visited again in 1992 with my old school friend as her husband & sons used to surf there & was pleasantly surprised - not half as bad as I'd remembered it! By pure chance, Derek & I became friendly with an older couple the first time we went up to Rarotonga (Cook Islands) a few years ago. It turns out that, like us, they were also English residents of NZ & he had served part of his time in the armed forces at Calshot. Small world! M, NZ

Hi Jo Following on to Moyas email another method was that unbaptised babies were buried by the wall of the church, thus when it rained the water came off the roof and onto the grave, it was considered to be Holy Water. One or two churches did this so it may be the case in your situation. Chris --- All of our Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. And attachments are also scanned before being added. Hello Jo, If you still cannot trace the burial of Peter Duke consider the practise that was common for young children right up until the 1950's. Nowadays the Church and local authority cemetery departments are very reluctant to discuss it, but babies and young children were very often buried on top of the existing occupants of the grave. Yes, un-baptized babies were not supposed to be buried in consecrated ground, so this was one way of getting around it, but that is not the entire answer because baptized babies were also buried in this way. It happened in our own family. My grandfather was buried in 1925 and had asked not to have a headstone but just a stone vase. When my aunt went to the cemetery one day in the 1950's she found grandfather's vase was missing but there was a vase engraved with the name of a young child in its place. It was very distressing for both families at the time; the local authority offered to remove the child if my grandmother wanted them to. However Granny's concern was for the mother of the young child who was actually known to her, so the child remains buried there although the grave is registered in my grandfather's name. So if you do not find the name of Peter DUKE on the headstone do not assume he is not there. Hello All, i may have asked this before but i desperately need help. How would i find deaths for people with no death date. i have no relatives still alive that could remember that far back so i am well and truly stuck. what i need to find is death or burial entries for my great great grandparents. Frederick and Emily WATTS at Aldershot both died after 1901 my grandmother knew her Gran so Emily must have died sometime up to about 1930 Louisa and James WHITE last known area Odiham 1891, my grandmother also knew her gran Louisa and i have been told she died in 1925. What i know for sure is they never left Hants and they staid in the Odiham, Basingstoke, Farnborough and Aldershot areas. Any ideas folks ? i really am at my wits end. Suzanne p.s. thank you for all your support over the ancient faces web site, i know now this isn't just an e-mail list its Cyber family :0)

In Canada, we celebrate Victoria Day on the Monday that precedes May 25, rather than 24 May, which is Queen's Victoria actual birthdate , the Queen's official birthday, and of course Empire Day. To us that was last monday 19 May. So yes Len, we still do celebrate the date, and our heritage, but perhaps the Commonwealth, rather than the Empire. On 1st July, in Canada we also celebrate Canada Day. It was known , until 1982, as Dominion Day, the date on which the nation was formed in 1867, through the British North America Act. The need for a union of the colonies at that time was made more urgent by the anti-British Fenians raids from the USA. So to you Len, a happy Empire Day David ----- Original Message ----- From: "len-strong" <len-strong@supanet.com> To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 23, 2003 3:07 PM Subject: [HantsLife] Empire Day. > Who remembers Empire Day? if you are a silver surfer like me you will do. Hi Len, yes times have changed, we used to celebrate Empire Day as Dominion Day here in Canada, but due to changes in the make up of the country through open immigration, we now celebrate Canada Day on the 1st July. But here in British Columbia we do celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday with the appropriate time off to drink her health (bit late for that now) on 19 June. But MY flag flies on the 24th May regardless ...Len, Vancouver
I need more brain power, so am sending this to all Hampshire lists in the hope that someone will have some ideas, or (oh wonderful thought!) actually know the people in question. I should point out that the spelling of the family's surname changes between GILLY and GILLEY at frequent intervals, so don't take that into account. I have two marriage certificates, which I THINK are for the same person. First certificate: 2 May 1864: Anna Eliza GILLY spinster aged 21 (birth records show her to be 17, christened 31 May 1846). Married Edwin John BROWN aged 22, Southampton. Anna's father: William GILLY, deceased, land steward. (He died in 1857 so correct.) A witness is Hannah GILLY (her mother). There is no cross by her name indicating she signed it herself. An Edwin BROWN died in Christchurch December 1864. Whether the same person or not, I don't know. Second certificate, four years later: 27 Sep 1868: Ann Eliza GILLEY, spinster aged 22 (age correct). Married Thomas BARTLETT aged 22, Mousehole, Hampshire. Anna's father: William GILLEY, coachman. Doesn't say "deceased". This one has a cross by her name. NOW! The first one is definitely my g-g-grandmother's sister. But is the second one the same person? Well, (this gets complicated here) the first one's nephew (my g-grandfather) eventually married the daughter of Thomas's brother and sister-in-law, who were the witnesses on the second certificate, so there is a definite family connection. And despite exhaustive searching the only birth I can find corresponds to the details on the first certificate. So, to sum up, in the first certificate all details but the age are correct, and in the second certificate she has changed the spelling of her first name, corrected her age and is shown as spinster, not widow. Now what do I do? I could get Edwin's birth certificate which might go some way to proving the man who died is the same man she married if the age is the same. The nearest I can find on the 1881 census is a Thomas Bartlett married to an Amy. Can't find Edwin on FreeBMD. His address at marriage was 9 North Front, presumably Southampton, while hers was 38 French Street. Is it possible that these addresses could be found on the 1861 census? If anyone has any ideas about where I look next, or can see something I have overlooked, bearing in mind that there doesn't seem to be anyone else of this name around the appropriate time, I'd be delighted to hear from them.
