    1. [HantsLife] Re: Rechabites or Reckabites --- Insurance ..definetly not!!
    2. Thanks Chris, Every week my Mother sent me to the St. Augustines church hall, on Holly Road, at Aldershot, to pay the Rechabite lady. Didn't know what it was, thought it was some kind of Insurance. My parents were definitely teetollers, in fact we were not allowed to have playing cards, and my Mother always said to stay away from women who smoked or wore red dresses as they were prostitutes. Isn't that funny, but just to be on the safe side I have never learned to play cards, smoke or wear red dresses. As they say, you can't be too careful, LOL !!! Cheers, Pam, an Aldershot, Hants gal in Arizona. always looking for - ROGERS - REEVES - MALT - CROOK - Hampshire. RENNEY - County Durham or ???

    3. It was formed in Salford for men in 1835, and one year later, women were admitted. It is now known as the Rechabite Friendly Society, and is based again in Manchester. It now has a membership of 20,000, down from 180,000 during WW1, but membership is slowly increasing. I believe that some 18% of the adult population of Britain is teetotal, so it has room for growth. There are branches in the States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and no doubt elsewhere in the world, particularly wherever the Brits saw the sun go down with a G & T. 3. This was one of the many so-called friendly societies which in the era before state insurance & social welfare paid comforts, principally on death, to members & their families, who themselves made a modest weekly contribution. 3. Hi, dear listers all Does anyone know enough about Rownhams, Southampton these days to be able to tell me if Greenhill Cottage stll exists, please? If not, can anyone tell me where it was in the early 1930s? I'm assuming it would have been in or very close to Rownhams Lane, but not really sure. I've just found out that one of my mum's cousins was born there. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this. Thankyou Maureen, 'Hampshire Hog in Kiwiland', NZ

    3. The Order of Rechabites was formed in the 1830's, as a Friendly Society which offered a temperance alternative. From Jeremiah 35;6 "But they said we will drink no wine, for Jonadab, the son of RECHAB, our father, commanded us saying "You shall drink no wine, neither you nor your sons for ever" Most Friendly Societies, at that time, met in Pubs, with the encouragement of the publican, often to the disadvantage of the membership, so the temperence of the Order of Recabites was a real alternative. Prior to the Welfare State, Friendly Societies were the only way through which the working class would receive help in time of sickness or old age, so with the introduction of Unemployment Insurance, Old Age pensions and the National Health, their demise began David. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Seamus" <webfootraf@iinet.net.au> To: <HAMPSHIRE-LIFE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 6:54 AM Subject: Re: [HantsLife] Rechabites or Reckabites --- Insurance ??? > G'day Pam. > > I believe The Rechebites were a temperance society. 2. When I was a small child at Aldershot, Hants. in the 1930s and 1940s, my Mother would send me weekly ? to pay the Rechabites, have no idea what that was. That could be an incorrect spelling, was it some type of insurance, if not does anyone know what it was ? It seems to me that about the mid- 1940s I didn't have to go pay it anymore. 1. [HantsLife] A Variety of Extra Names.
    2. Hello Listers, Had a researcher in London do some work for me. In Searching for my Information he filmed 13 pages of Church Records from Broughton and Bullington, Hampshire fom the late 1700s to about 1820. There are mainly Baptisms, Marriages and also a few Death records in a variety of names from those two areas. So I have info. on many people I have never heard of. Some are kind of difficult to read, but if you had people in either of those areas in that time I will be glad to have a look-see for you. My names of interest are :- ROGERS - MALT - REEVES. Some of the other names I see are :- OCCAMON - HACK - STEELE - GALE - BEAL - COOPER - SUTTON FUTCHER or BUTCHER - HURST - WORFORD - HAYTOR - HAWKINS HAYDEN - BEAN - HALL - STORY - MORGAN - BALDWIN - STONEMAN The above are all Baptisms, Burials and Marriages from Broughton, Hants. from Jan. 1792 to 1795. [ Just from one page, I have 12 more pages of names.] Regards, Pam [ RENNEY] McKinley, an Aldershot, Hants gal, now in Arizona.

It isn't actually a marriage certificate. It is a marriage entry in a parish register. In 1802 it will give the names, parishes, witnesses, and whether by Banns or Licence. 3. Hi listers I am new to this list and have only been working on my family history for about 6 months, so have lots to learn. Could someone please explain what details may be found on a Marriage Certificate. I have found the marriage entry listed in the parish records dated 3.6.1802, and according to that ref William Poore was of St Mary Bourne, and his wife Willoughby Butterfield was of Up Hurstbourne, is this Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hurstbourne Priors, or is there another Hurstbourne that I have missed. I have searched both these parishes, but cannot find an entry of birth for either of them. Would a copy of the Marriage certificate list where they were actually born, or would it just refer to them being of that parish at the time of their marriage. Would the marriage certificate also name the parents of the couple? or would it just show the names of the witnesses at the time.
