    3. A few more that my parents used to use and which are still in use today are: "in the doghouse" "In the Pink" "In Queer Street" "In a nutshell" "Hang fire" which I later learned came from the navy when a spark took so long to reach the gunpowder! "get down to the nitty gritty!" "A cow with it's tail to the west, makes weather the best, A cow with it's tail to the east, makes weather the least. " "Going to visit the Quack" used to make me think of duckponds not doctors!! "Its enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!" 3. "Up in Annies room behind the clock" was a favourite expression that my mother used as was "Bobs your Uncle" which puzzled me when I was small as I never had an Uncle Bob and could not understand what my mother meant. My father used to reply with "And Fannies your Aunt" which puzzled me even further. Another favourtie was "up the wooden hill" or "up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire" meaning go to bed. And my grandfather used to always say "He that is up is up and he that is down has to come up" which meant if you were feeling low the only way out was to "come up" out of it!! 3. I have found the following record on the IGI Fanny EMMETT baptised Bishops Waltham 9.2.1858 Parents George and Edith EMMETT I can't find anything to tie it to on FREEBMD yet, but keep looking. If SKS has the Bishops Waltham records for that period could they do a look up for me. Alternatively if there is SKS with access to the 1861 or 1871 Census for Bishops Waltham could they have a look for the family. Thanks Bev

    1. [HantsLife] Doctors of Andover
    2. Mike & Sheila
    3. Hi Listers could anyone please suggest where I may be able to get information as to some at least 3 members of family may have obtained their medical qualifications from. They were all born in Andover. William Poore (in his will dated 1760) refers to a shop in Andover, he was a surgeon, apothocary, and male widwife. In the Unviersal British Directory there is a listing for Philip Poore Physic. Not sure yet who this Philip is as William's Son Phillip Henry wasn't christened until 1764, but did become a doctor, surgeon, apothocary, male midwife. There is also a listing in the "Historical Directories - from Pigot & C0's Royal National & Commercial Directory of 1844 a Phillip H Poore m.d. of New Street Andover. George Vivian Poore F.R.C.P. born Sept 1843 Grandson to Phillip Henry, I have found details of some 24 papers he wrote for medical journals. On the 1881 census he was at 30 Wimpole Street, London. I would like to try and find out where they may have studied. Does anyone know if back then certifcates as such were awarded to state that a person had qualified in these fields, and if so where may I be able to obtain a copy from. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Many thanks Sheila South Australia --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). The reason that I ask is that within the last week someone (and it may have been you) posted the URL of a site in the UK about genealogy to the list. The webpage had a very smart, stylish page layout (which I was going to copy). Pastel colours, three across the page with white boarders. ( it wasn't http://www.british- genealogy.com/resources/registers/indexf.htm). However I thought that I had book marked it but I hadn't and I've deleted the e-mail. So if there is an archive... 3. Adele, Sorry about my previous message - I forgot Rootsweb do not allow HTML. This message should be more understandable!! In lieu of Gilberts bookshops, try a search for what you want on this wonderful site: http://www.usedbooksearch.co.uk/ Go to the site and add the details of the book you are looking for. I found one such copy of the book you want; it was originally published in 1902. Details of the bookshop selling a copy of the reprint are as follows: BOOKSELLER: M. D. Hawkes ADDRESS: The Coppice, Jordans Lane, Jordans, Bucks. HP9 2SW, UK The book costs £12.00 plus postage to anywhere in the world. I hope you manage to get the book Moya Page (nee Banting) researching BANTING and PERREN in Hampshire

    3. May I extend my grateful thanks to Alan, Kath & Beki for all their kind help, useful information & wise advice re my Rownhams/Nursling query. This is greatly appreciated. Thankyou also to Chris for 'our' websites latest pix. Wonderful. I hated Winchester (apart from King Alfred's statue & the rushing water at the city mill) as a child but came to love it & value it immensely on my trips back to the UK in 1988 & 1992. Now I have wonderful memories of it & am proud that both my grandmothers were associated with it. Many thanks also to Alan for telling the list a few weeks ago about the following website which I'm sure will be an excellent asset to us all when up & running fully - http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/registers/indexf.htm Maureen, NZ
