    1. Re: [HantsLife] sayings

    3. Rain cats and dogs: If the rain is teeming down the it's said to be raining cats and dogs. This seems to be an odd way of describing weather. The expression first appeared in print in 1653. ("It shall raine.....dogs and polecats"). There are three possible origins, one of which goes back to Norse times. In old Norse weather lore the cat was related to rain and the dog to the wind. If this were the origin then it is likely that the words would have appeared in print before 1653. The second suggestion puts the basis in the Greek word Catadupa, "cataract" or "waterfall". The final idea suggests that the drainage of medieval streets was so poor that cats and dogs frequently drowned during a heavy downpour. Swift's "Description of a City Shower" (1710) gives a good idea of what it was like. It's worth repeating. "Now, from all parts the swelling kennels flow/ And bear their trophies with them as they go/..../ Drown'd puppies, stinking sprats, all drench'd in mud/ Dead cats and turnip tops, come tumbling down the flood." You may take your choice. The argument continues. I think my ancestors had several "bad heir" days. My family tree is full of NOT holes...it's NOT him, it's NOT her.... My roots only go down so far, but my branches spread forever. While searching the pages we came across the Parish Summary of Account dated June 18. 1773, and I am hoping that someone may be able to explain what the rents are in reference to. Entry for Edward Poore Esq Total of Poore estate in Upton 488 a in Hurstbourne and 250 a in Vernham, and rent 150 pounds and 75 pounds respectively. To whom was the rent payable, and was this for leasing the land? William Poore 78 a in Vernham rent 29 pounds. I know that several members of Poore's were land owners as stated in the return for owners of land, but those list different acreages to the above. 3. Have heard the expression "Love a duck" but not the latter piece! The only thing we could find on this is: It is an exclamation in the "boy, oh, boy" or "wowee" vein. I have no idea as to it's derivation. There was a 1966 or so film starring Roddy McDowall, Tuesday Weld, Lola Albright, Ruth Gordon and Harvey Korman named "Lord Love A Duck", a way out off-beat comedy that lampooned the 60s Southern California teen culture. Is it - or can it be - positive, negative, or neutral? I've always heard it as mild amazement, expressing much the same sentiment as "well now I've seen everything," or "imagine that!" 3. Have a look at the following websites re this saying: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-whi1.htm http://www.macquariedictionary.com.au/p/dictionary/slang-w.html (You will have to scroll down to wigwam in the above entry of the Macquarie Dictionary) and finally: http://www.artistwd.com/joyzine/australia/strine/w.htm The last one is a bit slow to load but it does have plenty of "strine" expressions such as "Wally Grout", "water the horse" and widgie. (None of which are in popular use here!!) Regards, David.
