    2. Brian Cave
    3. Pam asked for the correct spelling of Selborne. The first is correct - Selborne - made famous by the Revd. Gilbert White (1720-93), the curate who was born there and lived there all his life. He wrote the well known "Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne" published in 1788 which has stood the test of time and made a mecca of the place for naturalists. Brian

    1. [HantsLife] SMITH Sutton Scotney
    2. historyresearch
    3. Hello all, This is another longshot but someone may be able to help or is connected to my Robert SMITH born about 1863 Alverstoke. Preamble: I have just received Robert's full service papers with the Royal Artillary 3/Middlesex Reg 1885-1898, and on these his next of kin are recorded as: at Sutton Scotney Father Richard Smith (crossed out) Mother Sarah Smith Brothers, James, George, David, Richard (younger) John, and sisters, Jane and Deborah Smith. Robert is recorded as a wheelwright and painter having served an apprenticeship with Mr GOATER of Sparsholt with whom he was living when he enlisted in 1885 - but no address. Robert was discharged to an address in South Africa and I have no idea of what happened to him afterward. If anyone knows anything about, has connections to, or can help me with this SMITH family (it would be Smith, wouldn't it!) then I would be very grateful for the info. His Burma medals with clasps were found in the effects of my late aunt, and none of us have any real idea as to who Robert Smith was. Plenty of theories, but nothing concrete. Finding his family might help. Thanks Vicki Turner

    1. [HantsLife] We have won another award!
    2. Chris & Caroline
    3. Our website Southern Life(UK) has won another award (see below) and it is the help we have received from the subscribers to this list that has achieved this for us. So give yourselves a pat on the back!! Many thanks to you all Chris and Caroline Hi Chris and Caroline: It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the staff of the Golden Gate Genealogy Forum on AOL has selected Southern Life(UK) (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~villages/ ) as the July 2003 winner of our Best Site Pick award. The team that reviewed the site found it to be an impressive compilation of detailed and unique information related to the history and life of the county of Hampshire, England, and its neighboring counties of Berkshire, Dorset, Isle of Wight, Surrey, Wiltshire, and West Sussex. The collection of photographs of the various towns and villages is extremely well done and of particular interest, while the additional information on local history, churches, nostalgia, and other areas of local colour adds significantly to the user's understanding of the life and times of our English ancestors. The site has been well planned and organized and is easy to navigate, allowing those with an interest in this area to readily locate desired information and relate directly to the people and times of the region. The team considered the site to be one of the best we have seen for providing detailed and well-documented information in a specific area of research. You can rightfully be proud of your efforts. You can view the award announcement at: http://www.genealogyforum.rootsweb.com/gfaol/bsp.htm You may also elect to display the attached BEST SITE PICK award logo on your web site. Your efforts are to be commended. Keep up the excellent work. John Fuller Golden Gate Genealogy Forum Best Site Pick Team Coordinator --- All of our Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Message From: "Chris & Caroline" Subject: Re: [HantsLife] SHIRLEY ADDRESS Will get back to you as have a 1914-15 Kellys CD But on the present map it is SHAYER ROAD ~~~~ Hi Moya I too have found Shayer Rd on a relatively recent map. I have no recollection of the name though, despite living in Shirley for 25 years & attending the school in Bellemoor Rd that runs parallel to the street in question! However, my map makes it look like a very built-up area, suggesting terraced rather than semi-detached houses, which would indicate they've been there for a while. From Victorian times, perhaps? As a Hampshire interest, by 'Googling' I discovered a self-taught artist in the style of John Constable, one William SHAYER who painted mainly New Forest scenes, born in Southampton, who lived & died in Shirley. I assume the street takes its name from him. Hopefully this will be the street you need & someone can come up with its full history. Good luck. Kind regards, Maureen, NZ
