You may be surprised to hear that Bill and Ben, and of course dear Weed, have been updated and still appear on TV. I have seen recordings of some of their shows on DVD. It was transmitted by the BBC and you might find they sell the DVDs Umba Globb Weed Pete -----Original Message----- From: Sylvia Showers [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 18 May 2005 05:45 To: [email protected] Subject: Remember ? Funny thing Ben The ironmongers near where we workd actually sold Elbow Grease!! It was a trade mark of some other company! I will always remember "Muffin the Mule". Not because I was a toddler, or a dad with kids on his knee, but because I came back from Cyprus for demob in 1956 aboard a troopship. The ship's Regimental Sgt Major took one look at my Royal Signals badge and decided I would run the ship's cinema, notwithstanding I knew nothing about running a movie projector, I was a Signaller and that was good enough for him. Aboard ship we had several families being repatriated from Cyprus because of the emergency, naturally there was a whole bunch of kids. There was also another bunch of kid's, albeit in the form of the 2nd Btn Grenadier Guards. As there was little to do aboard ship, the lads of the Grenadier's asked me if they could sneak into the ships cinema and watch the kids films I showed on a daily basis. Muffin the Mule was high on the kids agenda. My reward came as we were disembarking at Southampton. As we members of the Royal Signals were marching off the dock, the whole detachment of Grenadiers lining the ships rail sang us off to a new marching tune...yes we marched off to Muffin the Mule, with a slightly different version to that which the kids enjoyed...Len
In all this nostalgia there has not been one reference to Flanagan & Allen and their warm, gentle, relaxed style of singing was mimiced by many wannabe's, including me. It was somewhat in contrast to their more hectic comedic performances in "The Crazy Gang." "The Crazy Gang" comprised of three comedy double acts - Nervo and Knox, Flanagan and Allen, Naughton and Gold . I can remember seeing a performance at the Victoria Palace in the early 1950's Bud Flanagan, was born Reuben Waintrop in Spitallields, East London in 1896 and Chesney Allen was born William Ernest Chesney Allen in Brighten, Sussex in 1894. You can listen to some of their song at this site. Sadly it does not include "Underneath The Arches" http://great-song-stylists-uk.com/Flanaganallen/Flanallen2.htm David ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris & Caroline" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 18, 2005 5:00 AM Subject: [HantsLife] more nostsalgia > Another website with nostalgic Radioi and TV > See Sooty and Sweep and Bagpuss excerpts > Chris > http://www.sterlingtimes.co.uk/ > > > -- > No virus found in this outgoing message. > Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. > Version: 7.0.308 / Virus Database: 266.11.11 - Release Date: 16/05/2005 > > > ==== HAMPSHIRE-LIFE Mailing List ==== > "GENEALOGISTS DO IT IN TREES!" > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection.
