I had obtained certificates from Antony Lambert some time ago but seem to have trouble connecting to the address that I have. Perhaps someone can give me the correct address if there has been a change. Kind regards, Helen Ginn Ontario - Canada

PORTSMOUTH With the success of the Trafalgar 200 celebrations today saw a dramatic start to the Festival of the Sea at Porstmouth with a re-enactment of the deck of Victory being created and the firing of broadsides. Radio Solent is keeping people up to date with commentaries etc and this can be heard online at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/solent.shtml For those who missed the Battle re-enactment and the fireworks you can see the whole thing at: BEWARE the video lasts for 42 minutes and is a bit slow in starting but livens up as the battle progresses! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4627453.stm You may also be interested in a related programme 'Trafalgar 200', which will be shown on July 30 at 7pm on BBC ONE South/South West/South East/East. Schedules and information for television and radio coverage of the event can be found at the following address: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4081778.stm There were a number of complaints about the exodus from the city after the fireworks, in some cases it took several hours to clear the city! Road were closed and buses held up, a dozen extra trains were also put on and at one time the Harbour Railway station had to close with over 1,000 people being stranded! WINCHESTER After many years of campaigning King Alfreds College is now to be known as the University of Winchester and is one of the smallest universities in the country. EASTLEIGH The long awaited cinema is now under consideration, plans have been submitted to build the cinema (7 screens), a hotel, bowling alley, gym and restaurant above what is now the Tesco car park on Southampton Road. The car park will be closed during the construction but will reopen when completed. The scheme is scheduled to begin around September of this year, and will adjoin the Swan Centre shopping mall. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 2. DAVID PARKER
    3. I recently found, or to be more exact ,was found by, a "long-lost cousin", and she was really long-lost. She was born in 1932, and because of a family feud my grandfather forbade any of the family to speak to or see her or her mother. Her parents separated in 1934, and in 1939 her father, my father's brother, died. She had never seen a picture of her father, and she knew nothing about him until I was able to send her pictures and information. It was really thrilling to exchange photographs and information - although I have tried to avoid mentioning Rugby, for in 1950 she moved to New Zealand. She was describing to me the poverty of her early years in England, and told me how she and her mother lived for a period during the war in a "condemned House". She told me that because of the housing shortage caused by the bombing, people were permitted to again live in certain of the condemned housing. However, she said, this did not include children, and she then re! called how she would have to hide or go out when the rent collector or inspector called. I had forgotten about condemned housing, in my part of Portsmouth and Fareham there was none, but the phrase is not new to me. I presume that this included houses that were earmarked for slum clearance and those that were bomb damaged. Can anyone remember the conditions and situation at that time. Does any one have any memories of also living in a "condemned house"? Thanks David

    1. Lili Marlene / Desert Rats and a 1950 reunion of the 8th Army]
    2. Chris & Caroline
    3. Off topic but we thought it might interest some listers who have connections. Chris and Caroline Please pass this message on to anyone you may know who might be interested or know where to find veterans to whom it may apply. I have been Contacted by a certain Mr. George Magnus in the UK. The late Lale Andersen, who some may know was the original singer of the German Version of Lili Marlen, was his Grandmother. Hello This is a real long shot on behalf of my mother Carmen-Litta Magnus who is one of Lale Andersen's two surviving children. You'll be aware that Lale was the original singer of Lili Marlene. My mother is very keen to trace anybody still living who met Lale when she visited London in 1950 as a guest of the 8th Army. My mother is assisting the German producer of a forthcoming television documentary series entitled "Legends". The producer Britta-Susann Lubke is based in Bremen. She will willingly travel to the UK to meet and interview anybody who can legitimately claim to have met Lale back in 1950. Further to our recent correspondence, I have just heard from Britta-Susann Lubke who tells me that "the deadline for shooting this interview would be end of September". Britta also informs me that she is anxious to interview any British serviceman "especially in the 7th Brigade, the Desert Rats" who can recount the moments when the song Lili Marleen was broadcast. Tall order eh?! Once again, many thanks for your interest and help. George can be reached in the UK under tel. No.: 01284 388344 or via e-mail george.magnus @ btopenworld.com Also I will take and forward any on-group Answers to him if required. Please pass on to your reunion or history groups, local RBL or other Ex Servicmen/women clubs, and groups etc., -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
