I suppose it is the difference between the number of visitors (the index page counter) and the number of pages those visitors go to - so if 1 person looks at 20 pages, that counts as 20 hits and not 1 visitor. Thanks Jim
Whoops!! Thanks Jim Our appologies!! The hit counter we had was from Microsoft and it was only recording the hits to the main index page, not to the individual pages which it should have done. A friend of ours who has hosted the website for us put in another counter and in two months we had recorded over 20,000 individual hits. We had the Bravenet Counter installed but it was hidden as it was also showing us statistics and we decided to check it and it showed over 800 thousand and I had misread it, thought it was 8million 900 thousand!! If you can understand this, our usage log http://www.southernlife.org.uk/stats1/usage_200508.html You are better than me!! This is actual figures for August 2005. Hi Don, In 1871 he would probably have been at Portsmouth Borough Gaol and House of Correction. His Majesty's Prison, St Mary's Road, Portsmouth, did not open until 31st August, 1878, and I believe that the use of hulks for civilians ended in 1857, their use having declined over the previous decade. The 1881 census lists two prisons in Portsmouth - ""HMS Local Prison Milton" and "H M Convict Prison Portsmouth" However, doesn't the actual 1871 census give its name ? While I was able to visit England this past year, I made a discovery that my gr-gr-gr-grandfather was born in the Fareham area. I have looked through the Parish records for that time and was able to locate John Shirville chr Nov 1, 1801 at St. Pauls' Church, Fareham (this fits perfectly with what I was able to locate). Little is known about this family. Does anyone have any information on this family? My mother thought he came from France, but my research has proven that false. His father may have come from France, but I don't even know where to search to find about those coming into England. Thanks for any help you might be, Nancy
I'm researching a John Jackson age 22 who in the 1871 census was listed as a convict at Portsea, Hampshire. Could someone please tell me what the name of this prison would be. Thank You Don Wilson
We have been asked to do an interview on Southern Counties Radio on 29th August about our website Hampshire Life, this is also broadcast via Radio Solent as well so there will be an opportunity for you all to tune in. Southern Counties and Radio Solent broadcast on the net, (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/radindex.shtml?link click on either station on the right hand side) I am not sure of times but it will be during the evening here so will post up the times a bit nearer the date. Without the help of the subscribers to the Hampshire lists our website would not be as popular as it is today with over 8 million hits altogether, so many thanks to all those that have sent us in snippets and photos to be included. Thanks to those who replied on Lt Risdale, further information has just come in which may help out. As I said she has tried the Military lists but to no avail. Chris Lt Ridsdale was John Herbert Ridsdale, born 16th Dec. 1908 at 21 Hindes Road, Wealdstone, eldest son of Harold Edgar Ridsdale (afterwards Rev. Ridsdale) and Ruth Margaret Ridsdale, nee Rowsell. At the time of his birth his father was a schoolmaster at St Nicholas' School, Harrow. He was unmarried at the time of his death, but if he had survived the war he would have married my mother (and I presumably wouldn't exist in my present form!) I have found out one other bit of information about his service record. The London Gazette is online and records that Cadet John Herbert Ridsdale became a 2nd Lieutenant on 27th December 1941. It seems he was working for the Milk Marketing Board before he joined up

Marriage licences for Hampshire parishes (and others) could also be issued by the Faculty Office or by the Vicar General. For details, see Jeremy Gibson's guide to Bishops' Transcripts and Marriage Licences. Many of the Faculty Office and Vicar General licences are indexed on the pay-per-view site British Origins. If you are looking for a particular entry, I may be able to help. Alan McGowan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lesley C. Does anybody know where a person can find out about a Corps activities in the UK around the mid 1940s? The lady in question is after any info on an officer in the Royal Corps of Signals who died in N.Africa 21st Dec 1943 and was probably in the Colwyn Bay area of N Wales prior to this. She says she has tried Rootsweb but no luck, not sure if she means the military list or not. The person she is after is a Lt Ridsdale She is going to try the R Sigs Depot at Blandford as they have a library there but if anyone has any other suggestions that might help her please pass them on (to it via the list as it may help others). Thanks in anticipation Chris

I believe the Harleian Society volumes list all surviving Hampshire Marriage Allegations, apart from 275 extra ones which were found later. These extra Allegations were listed by Arthur J Willis, and published in a booklet in 1962 by the Society of Genealogists. I have a copy of the booklet. The booklet is included in the microfiche version of the Hampshire Marriage Allegations, sold by Hampshire Record Office, but it is probably not included in CD versions.
