    3. Hi all I'm passing on a piece of info which might prove very helpful for those elusive ancestors on the 1901 census, Throughout September, ancestry.co.uk & ancestry.com are providing free access to the 1901, (almost). You can view the whole household & all the neighbours on the same page. You still have to pay to get the actual address, though. However, this is what has happened to me today..... I have been searching for 4 years for my great grandma's name on the 1901. ancestry.co.uk has just provided it, surname spelt incorrectly but everything else fine. Armed with the incorrect surname, I went to the 1901 Census Online site & found absolutely nothing. All was not lost as the webiste has now introduced a new search facility which currently has a free trial for a limited time. Eventually I found great granny - not only was her surname wrong, but her birthplace & the Civil Parish were not spe!t correctly! Never mind, the most important thing is that I now have her details for March 1901 so keep trying, everyone, no matter how odd your searches may seem. Maureen, NZ

I uploaded the burials for Petersfield for 1558 to 1837 a few weeks ago but I don't think my message got through due to Rootsweb being offline. Good luck all. She was certainly an alderman (woman?) & possibly Mayor or Mayoress of Southampton but that wasn't as long ago as 75 years! ;-) She used to come & open our Church Garden Parties & Christmas Fayres at Shirley, year after year, when I was little. She was a very popular lady. Maureen, NZ

    3. The one I am referring to Maureen is HENRY CAWTE who was mayor in 1905 so it would be 75 years ago. KITTY CAWTE became Mayor of Southampton in 1956. Whether this was the daughter of Henry or not I am not sure. 3. Does anyone have access to the 1851 British census? If there WAS one! To find the following information, I had to go to the public library to use their Ancestry Plus computer program. I do not have access to this at home. I seek information on George Griffin, born about 1811 in Dorset (Corfe Mullen). His wife was Sophia (maiden name unknown- born in Kings Worthy or Abbotts Worthy, Hants per two of the census takers) The Census for 1861 and 1871 show George and Sophia with a large family, living in Winchester, parish of Bartholomew Hyde. I wish to know what other children were in the home before the 1861 census, and especially seek Julia E. Griffin. All children listed in the 1861 and 1871 census were born in Headbourne Worthy, Hants. The 1861 census lists 7 children, 1871 census lists 8 children, and one granddaughter (born in London ! Have no idea who this child's parents were). 1881 census doesn't have either George or Sophia (don't know what happened to them), but shows Julia E. Griffin as living with her married brother Tom. Residence: 21 New Street, St. John the Evangelist, London. Julia Emily Griffin married my great-grandfather James Avey in London in 1885, and her sister, Ellen Griffin married William Day (a police officer) in Winchester, and they raised my grandfather Ernest Avey (son of James). Thank you to any and all who can provide me with dates, places and names!! Margot in USA --- http://USFamily.Net/dialup.html - $8.25/mo! -- http://www.usfamily.net/dsl.html - $19.99/mo! ---

    3. Got this from a lister and thought I would pass it on for your comments. Chris Hi Chris I'm a bit behind reading the lists, so someone may have sent in the following already. I bet it will set off lots of fireworks! (I've just sent the message to the Bristol list) Ron I haven't seen this yet on any lists, but come 2051, '61, '71, it will be generating lots of discussion! The following quote is from a trailer for a BBC Radio 4 programme: "In Part One of "Losing the Past", Richard Hollingham investigates specific examples of what is now unplayable or unreadable. For example, he can reveal for the first time, that the UK population census data from 1951 are lost, as are significant parts of the 1961 and 1971 census data." http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/losing_the_past.shtml I'll be 104 in 2051, so can't imagine that I'll be contributing! Best wishes Ron

    3. Not sure what ist it was but somebody mentioned CAWTE as being the Mayor of Southampton a while ago. So am sending this snippet from todays Southern Echo. Chris "75 YEARS AGO Southampton was coming to terms with the shocking news following the death of Henry CAWTE JP, an ex-mayor of Southampton and ex alderman of the Borough Council, who died from cerebral haemorrhage. Mr Cawte was one of the best known men in Southampton, who had been a Shirley resident for more than 50 years and a familiar face through his work on the borough council and as a builder and contractor"
