_____ From: Bev Wadhams [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 11 October 2005 00:19 To: '[email protected]'; '[email protected]'; '[email protected]' Subject: Navy ship HMS Destroyer? Looking at some old photographs earlier I discovered that you could with a bit of enhancement see some writing on the sailors hat bands at a family wedding. One of the hat's writing reads HM Destroyer the other --------Marines. Was there actually a ship called HMS Destroyer or is the rest of the inscription on the back of the hat? Would a hat actually of said HM Marines or again would the inscription carry on round the hat band. Any ideas? I tried a Google search but didn't get anywhere much, they mostly seem to be HM destroyer ..........? Thanks Bev
This is being sent out as a warning to others and has appeared on another list, though we have had nothing on Hampshire-Life like this I felt it needed to be brought to your attention. A lot of these have links that in fact ENCOURAGE more spam. Chris List Admin Message: I have now had several messages off-list from subscribers who have received a strange email purporting to originate from Rootsweb. The message is shown below and it is appearing to originate from other lists too. It is suspected to be a spoof and a poorly masked attempt to harvest email addresses by hoping the recipient will click on the link sent, thus confirming their existence. I would urge anyone receiving these messages to delete them and NOT click on the link. Sometimes persons engage third party anti-spam services to filter out their unwanted mail, and send out such messages. As a matter of routine, I always reject any requests to comply, for it is the user's responsibility to manage their own "white lists" and not expect others to do it for them. In the case of messages being routed via Rootsweb, there are plenty of adequate in-built safeguards to prohibit spam from being forwarded - only the Listowner gets it! The message to ignore is...... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "You recently sent an e-mail to me at [email protected] Your message was NOT delivered. Message From: "Chris and Caroline" Subject: Re: [HantsLife] Southampton Directories NEWBOLD Mrs 22 Livingstone Road Portswood Strange thing is Cunard Ave is not listed!! ~~~~~~~~~ Thanks Chris This particular Newbold may well fit in. Re Cunard Ave - highly likely it wasn't there in 1915. As you know, I lived in Janson Road & well remember my grandpa telling me that when he was young, that whole area was allotments/semi-rural - not a house to be seen. Kind regards Maureen, NZ
Hi all Sorry to bother you but the Historical Directories site won't let me in today, no matter how I hold my mouth. Please can anyone with Southampton directories covering the period 1938-1940, tell me if there is a PLA or CM NEWBOLT/NEWBOLD or similar, or anyone with the surnames BEARE or WEEKS, residing at 44 Cunard Avenue, Shirley. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you Kind regards Maureen, NZ Researching in Hampshire: ASHLEY/AISHLEY, BANNISTER, BEARE, GRIST, HAMMETT, MUNDY, VAN SANTEN, WEEKS & others

Following on from Maureen's request, does anyone have directories covering Eastleigh 1890 -1900? Thanks Bev

Hi Listers I am trying to find out what happened to 2 of my gg uncles and hope SKS will be able to help. One the 1851 Census Andrew (22) and William WINTER (20) are at Plymouth Citadel Barracks Plymouth Devon in the military. There are a few other Durley lads on the list: Richard Gumbleton (22 - Upham) John S Knapp (22 - Durley) William Pavey (20 - Durley) Can any one throw any light on any of these lads and the reason they may have been signing up? I am trying to find out what happened to Andrew and William as I cannot find them on later Census records. I suspect that they may have died during the course of their service. To date I have not been able to locate their deaths. I would really appreciate some help with this as locating them will complete the tree for this family for the 1800's. In case anyone is interested I have downloaded all the soldiers listed at Plymouth Citadel Barracks on the 1851 that originated from Hampshire. There were approx 760 men there altogether when the census was taken. Best wishes Bev

Thanks Len, glad you enjoyed reading it. I regretted not listening more to my grandmothers and asking them about their early life. It then occurred to me that if I didn't record my memories, then they would eventually be lost as well. I am grateful to Chris and Caroline for Southern Life and putting my memories on there. I have enjoyed reading all the other memories people have written. Jeanne

Jeanne, what an interesting read relating to your story of Marchwood. Many of the things you mention, icy windows, log fires and the ubiquitous paraffin stove, generally a Valor, bring my memories of the same period flooding back.....Len Payne, Canada
