Hello, I, too, have been lurking for a few months. Just a reminder as to the surnames I am researching: FREEMANTLE - areas I know they resided - Porchester, Fareham, Winchester, East Stratton, Micheldever. Also spelled FREEMANTELL in some records. SHIRVILLE, SHIRVALL, SHIRVALLE, SHERVALL, ETC. - The only area I know they resided is Fareham. This ancestor was born 1801 in Fareham and had moved to London by 1833. His name was John and his parents were John and Jane. Family stories had the family coming from France originally. John was a master bootmaker. Other names linked to these surnames are: COLE, MERTELE (MARTELE), OSGOOD, and GUPPY. Anyone with information on any of these families please contact me. Any help would be appreciated. Nancy
Ah - sweet peas - my wife always grew them each year when we lived in Surrey - we moved to L.A. some 13 years ago and she has continued that success. On the other hand I have given up digging a 6 foot ditch for my runner beans - can't dig much more than 6 centimetres the two things I really miss here are runner beans and new potatoes. I was in Houston last week and at the end of the day one of my clients (a German) took me round the corner to an English pub, which was his local and frequented by his English friends. I ordered a pint of Boddington and as it was an English pub served by an Englishman with English voices all around and with a pint I got really confused - I thought I had to pay in pounds - I had a blank spot on the $. Later on t.v. they had the final game of the Houston - St Louis baseball series to see who would go into the world series (strange they should call it world when only the U.S. and Canadian temas can compete) - Houston won and the town went crazy - strange that in the pub all the English were so into the game. Now if it had been the England - Australia test match. I've been pursuing the name of PRICKTOE/PRICTOE and occassionally PRESTOE. This is a very scarce surname so I've been extracting all of the records that I can from the internet. Jane PRICTOE was my ggg g/m born Knights Enham 1836. The name is almost exclusively from that area. I have visited the LDS library and extracted most of the Andover records and have linked most of the PRICKTOE family. Thanks to "The Genealogist" I have been trawling through the BMDs since 1837 and have reached 1960 so far. Thanks to ancestry I have from 1851 through 1901 censuses (although unfortunately they have taken the 1851 offline for a while). I have found several "cousins" through the Hants list and also the Wilts list, as some of the line went over the border to the Hungerford district. One other line went to Brentford. I would be very interested in any knowledge of living Prictoes because they are almost certain to be linked to the tree that I have created and Iwould love to get in touch with them. Offshoots from this line in the Andover area are BULPIT, FISHER,WEEKS, BIRD and two lines of SMITH Paul

Bev. I don't believe submarines had names until the beginning of the 2nd world war. So, would have had HM Submarines on the seaman's cap tally band. HM Destroyers would have been a war time requirement. Having said that, I seem to recall that during the 2nd war, Sailors cap tally bands just had HMS on them. Submariners never revealed the name of their ship on their tally bands. My father served on K 4, K16 & HMS Royalist during the first world war. I have photos of him in uniform with ship names on his cap tally band. Plus one with HMS Victory. If Ben Skeats reads this; he will be able to give us the correct answer. Looking at some old photographs earlier I discovered that you could with a bit of enhancement see some writing on the sailors hat bands at a family wedding. One of the hat's writing reads HM Destroyer the other --------Marines. Was there actually a ship called HMS Destroyer or is the rest of the inscription on the back of the hat? Would a hat actually of said HM Marines or again would the inscription carry on round the hat band. Any ideas? I tried a Google search but didn't get anywhere much, they mostly seem to be HM destroyer ..........? Thanks Bev ==== HAMPSHIRE-LIFE Mailing List ==== Visit Where your ancestors lived..... Not sure Bev but I think you will find that during Wartime a lot of the sailors hats had HM Destroyers, HM Submarines etc meaning they were posted to destroyers or submarines. Not necessarily that there were ships of those names which as far as I know there weren't. The same with the Marines men serving with the marines would have HM Marines on their hats. The name of their ship would not have been on the hatband. I think that is the case, if not somebody with more sea knowledge will correct me I'm sure.
