    3. Did anyone in the UK watch the dramatization on Ch4 tonight about the Somme? Absolutely brilliant and an eye opener. This was Britains biggest defeat with 19,000 killed in one day and 35,000 wounded. Ch4 are doing some more on this line I believe. 1. New Zealand UK style!!
    2. PentonyGraham
    3. Message from Chris at Hampshire Life, he found on a map a site in Wiltshire called New Zealand, well I have Googled New Zealand Hampshire and come up with the following... 29 pages later....curiosity got the better of me, but I had seen it on the atlas some time ago, and never bothered about it... seems there is a bit of history there, I thought perhaps a new town.. but...read on.. then I thought perhaps it had to do with WW1 when New Zealand Soldiers where in hospitals in England, one I knew off was at Brockenhurst, then another one at Walton on Thames... yes I have quoted both Hampshire and Wiltshire..it comes under British History on line. CHUTE. A History of Wiltshire. Chute is on the boundary of Wiltshire and Hampshire. Roman road goes through the area. New Zealand Farm was built 1841 and 1879. 600m. east of Gammons Farm, in the mid 20th Century Chantry Farm was built south of New Zealand Farm... (this is quoted on page 7 of 29) I would therefore suggest that anyone as interested as I am in this name, should print out the page(s) and have a read of some lovely English history..Barons. Viscounts.. Right through out England one can come across names of other cities spread through out the world, Washington for one... so the English do not need a passport to travel to New Zealand any more, its right on their doorstep! I will now make a coffee, and read up about Chute and New Zealand.. Wonder who named it as such... that is what I would like to know.. since it only came into being 1840.. did one of the locals visit NZ or their relatives.. This is why I have sent this to both Hampshire and New Zealand site... Adele Clareville.

    3. Hello Everybody, You may be interested to know that New Zealand Farm is still there and has a very large sign to indicate it as the entrance is passed on Chute Causeway. My wife and I were at the entrance last Saturday afternoon enjoying the view which stretches for about twelve miles to the south. When winter is here it is a very cold spot and it is good sheep farming country. I will make some local enquiries to see if I can find the source of the name. Rod in Andover.

    3. Hi Chris I had a couple of magnetis bracelets that was supposed to cure all sorts but it didn't make any difference, though I guess the type of magntic treatment you refer to is much more advance. BTW Since arriving hear in OZ they lost the magnetic fields, must be too near the south pole. Even my Swiss compass needle point swings down toward the ground. 2. I finally checked with my Hants friend - and yes, there is still (at least) one bicycling French onion seller in Hampshire, called Pascal, aged about 40ish - his father who also used to make the trip, died recently... The Harrow pub at Steep, buy their onions from Pascal Best wishes Hille

    3. I can remember an old house/business in Horncastle. Lincolnshire with a Priest Hole.. this property was bought by my Uncle and Aunt and they showed me the priest hole. we went up into the attic, and had to be careful, as we looked down there was a small cubby hole.. mind you the priest would have to have been slim! nevertheless it was there... very old building. This is what I miss out in NZ... old property with bits and pieces built in... and even ghosts! Adele

    3. This is all I could find Derek Though a lot of our church history shows there are a lot of priest holes around the county, though non catholic. Chris One on Berkshire http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/journal/Sep2002/CatholicRecusancyInBerkshire.htm A lot of the houses of catholics also had these built in, not just churches etc., West Grinsead .........The work at West Grinstead continues. On Father Goddard's arrival at the Priest's House in 1997 the first winter was so cold the house might not have had a roof, so full of draughts it was. The loft has since been insulated. In the course of improvements two years ago Father Goddard discovered a third priest hole http://www.madeleinebeard.co.uk/Documenta/shrine.html Wymering ..........Just a stone's throw from Wymering Church, there are a couple of once-secret priest holes in the building, used for hiding Catholic clergy during the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. http://www.portsmouthtoday.co.uk/mk4custompages/CustomPage.aspx?PageID=26959&sectionID=4553 ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 12:02 PM Subject: [HantsLife] priests holes > Dear Chris, > Are there any details available abou catholic 'priests holes', p;ease? > > Regards, Derek > > > ==== HAMPSHIRE-LIFE Mailing List ==== > "GENEALOGISTS DO IT IN TREES!" > > ============================== > Find your ancestors in the Birth, Marriage and Death Records. > New content added every business day.
