    2. historyresearch
    3. Hello all, I wonder if anyone can help. I need the baptism of William STREET abt 1839 Hursley. His father's name was James, mother unknown. Being cheeky, any siblings would also be useful as would any of the pre-1881 censuses. William married Betsey REMSBURY in 1868 in Westend Southampton. Not asking for much, am I ? !!! But anything anyone can give me would pull me out of this pit of despondency. Thanks. Vicki

    1. Under Carter
    2. burt
    3. An Under Carter was the person who helped the carter - the man who drove The horses for a farmer or sometimes for a delivery firm in town. He would help load on and off, tie the tarpaulin down, light the cart lamps and be ready to leap down and open/close gates, feed the horses, take them to stable etc. and when the cart needed breaking, it was his job to shove the hunk of wood into the wheel to stop it rolling. 1. The Scotsman - digital archive
    2. Chris and Caroline
    3. Forwarded from the Eng Hants list. Chris Hi List As part of its St Andrew's Week celebrations the Scotsman Digital Archive is currently offering free access to its database. The offer expires at midday on 7th December. The archive contains digital copies of every issue of the Scotsman from 1817-1950. You will have to register (free) to access the archive. In spite of its title The Scotsman does not seem to focus entirely on Scottish news. For example a search on "Southampton" produced over 50 articles just in the period 1817-1876. and a similar result for Hampshire. http://archive.scotsman.com

    1. A sad loss to Southampton
    2. Chris and Caroline
    3. It has been decided that the old King George V Graving Dock at Southampton is to be scrapped. Reportedly the largest of its kind in the world the wooden gates (150ft wide by 60ft deep) have already been dismantled and are due to be burnt. According to APP the firm that owns it it has made not one penny since the 1970s. The last ships to use it have been the cruise liners. Many people will remember the site of the Queen Mary or Elizabeth, The France or the United States standing proud in the dock as they drive past on the buses through Millbrook. Work is hoped to be completed by end of December Chris PS if there are any old southampton dock workers on the list who would like a copy of a free supplement of a Pictorial Special of Southampton Docks that came with the Daily Echo let me have your postal address and I can send it on. First come first served though as only got one, or maybe two copies if I can get next door neighbours!!!
