    3. Beer by the pint, Shandy (50/50 beer and lemonade)by the litre. Petrol was changed from gallon to litre by Chancellor Clarke so that tax increases would appear to be only a quarter of the per gallon figure. The reason for changing the Red Duster is security apparently. Everybody will recognize the blobs on blue but will have no idea what the flag flown by the UK Fleet since Jimmy II is. 3. They tell us they are dangerous as people can jump on/off at any time because there are no doors at the entrance. Thought the replacements were going to be European bendy busses, thus attracting EU subsidies whereas the double decker does not get any subsidies. Pete

    3. Have only seen one artic bus but I think that was in Italy. The fuel cell has not been tried over here yet, BUT, a council and police force in the west country are trying a new fuel made from Wheat!! They reckon it is far cheaper and there is less harmful to the environment. 3. True David, the Wilts and Dorset buses were the same, with the sunken aisle down the offside of the bus. Luckily the double deckers in Bournemouth and Swaythling had no passengers on!! The Bournemouth case there were no cars following and nobody on the pavement as well. They have withdrawn these for tests as it has never happened before, but it was a freak gust of around 90mph that did it. Apparently they can take the tops off for use as sightseeing buses. Single deckers are as you say more popular, I think this is because they have cut so many services over the past five years that hardly anybody uses them these days, despite the government saying we should use them more. They are expensive and most of them dirty. Case yesterday where CCTV actually filmed three teenagers setting fire to the rear seat of a bus full of passengers then getting off and running away. Luckily the drive managed to put it out/ A lot of the buses over here now have CCTV installed and some have armoured glass around the driver as too many of them are getting assaulted by teenagers and late night drunks. 3. You are perfectly correct there David, we have a couple of the bendy buses in Southampton/Eastleigh but they have difficulty in manoevuring the narrow roads so are not used very often. They are used a lot in Europe, especially Germany, Austria and Italy. In the gales the other night a double decker in Bournemouth lost its roof, was a clip on type, the week before a single decker ran into a house, and Monday night a double decker lost its roof going under the railway arch at Swaythling ( a favourite spot for this) despite there being flashing warnings after passing a sensor and the bridge well marked heightwise!! 3. It is the Red Routemaster buses only. They were introduced for a 10 year life cycle but have gone well over that by about 20 years and now need to be updated. There will also be green buses, which is the term for environmentally friendly ones not the colour!! 3. Remember , Sharon, that the school leaving age was much lower at that time. During the first half of Victoria's reign most children left school at about 11 years to start working. The next 75 years 1870 - 1845 brought many changes. 1. 1870 Act Compulsory attendance from 5-13 (with exceptions) 2. 1876 Act . No employment was allowed under 10 years of age. Children over 10 and under 13 could be employed if they held a certificate issued by a school inspector. 3. 1880 Act . Penalised employers of children under 13 years who did not have a certificate that they had reached the educational standard required by the local bye-laws 4. 1893 Act Minimum leaving age raised to 11 5. 1899 Act Minimum leaving age raised to 12 6. 1900 Act No employment under fourteen without a certificate 7. 1918 Act Full-time education compulsory from 5 - 14 years. 8. 1926 The Hadlow Report recommended raising the minimum leaving age to 15. 9. 1929 Legislation introduced to raise the leaving age to 15. Defeated. 10 1936 Act The school leaving age to be raised to 15 as from September 1939. Not implemented because of Second World War. 11 1938 The Spens Report said that raising the school leaving age to 16 may not be immediately practicable but was inevitable. 12 1944 Act The leaving age was raised to 15, but was delayed for two years 13 April 1947 School leaving age raised to 15. 3. Adele. If like me you were brought up in the days of Victorian/ Edwardian parentage. You would have been told by your father "Never volunteer for anything"!
