Out of interest I looked at the list and was interested to see 2 items on the list for ships that sailed from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. One of these, the Winthrop Fleet, was full of people who were believed to have come from Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Could it be that they actually sailed from Yarmouth (i.e. what we call Great Yarmouth today in Norfolk). Or was there some reason why a "fleet" would have sailed from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight (or Wright as detailed on the list) with lots of people from East Anglia aboard. In the last five minutes I have up loaded the complete revamped Isle of Wight villages and churches to my website Either go to the main index at http://southernlife.org.uk and click on IOW Villages on the left or go to http://www.southernlife.org.uk/wightind.htm If any photos are missing or any other problems please let me know. But don't tell me the island has sunk or not!! Chris SOUTHERN LIFE(UK) http://Southernlife.org.uk History of the IOW and Hampshires Villages,Towns and Churches
On Radio 4 this morning there was a woman from Fort Worth Texas(?) who wanted to recycle her Christmas cards. So she tried locally and thre was nothing and she decided to try the net and there was not one place in the whole of the US that would recycle them. The first eight that came up on the search engine were all UK so she chose one and emailed the council and asked if she could recycle her cards and to send the address. The site was in the Isle of Wight and she did not know where this was but contacted them and they agreed but thought it would be environmentally uneconomical but she went ahead and spent $4 sending them by ship so that it was environmentally friendly and they arrived safe and sound in the Isle of Wight, she has now passed the information on to her friends and family and they are saving up all their cards from the year and will send them to the Isle of Wight. So shows that the UK does lead the world in one aspect!! Chris
Oh to be in England, Now that Southern Life is here. What more can I say, except " Oh Happy Day " Sylvia in Fredericksburg
Cheers Rod Lot more to retype though, takes about 15 minutes for each village as have to look up more info, rephrase all the text and lay it out then change the resolution and alter the pictures and resize, edit those that need it!! So this will be a long slow job as still got around 1,800 pages left! After a long rest (if you call typing out about 1,000 webpages and editing them a rest!) the lists favourite website is back. Well almost! The Hampshire villages, churches, links, Lens Corner and the NZ hospital and items of interest are all running. There is one thing different the resolution is 1200 so you need to update your browsers and this will make the photos bigger and easier to see. The reason I have changed to 1200 resolution is that a lot of websites are now changing to this and 800X600 is not used so much on the newer ones! Sorry about that but I am not going to spend 10-15 minutes on each page changeing back!! Anyhow hope you all enjoy the new look, the other counties and the Isle of Wight will follow as soon as I can do them. For those new to this it is a history of the villages and churches of Hampshire and can be found at http://southernlife.org.uk Chris SOUTHERNLIFE(UK) The history of the Hampshire Villages and churches http://southernlife.org.uk
