Thanks to all the people who responded to my query about the 1851 census. I'll investigate the various sources. In the meantime I would be grateful if Kathleen in Chicago could check the whereabouts of Ellen Bellinger. I thought I had found her baptism in 1837 in South Hayling but the 1861 census gives her age about 3/4 years younger (therefore about 1840/41) and lists Portsea as her birthplace. I was wondering whether there were two Ellen Bellingers in the area at the time. I thought the 1851 census might be able to clear this up as she would still presumeably have been living with her parents at the time. Thanks Gill
