    3. Please could someone tell me, where or what is Landport? Is or was it the same place as Portsea? I have census entries which I think are for the same person, giving both names as places of birth. Thank you for your help. 3. This from White's 1859 Directory. "LANDPORT, the central and most populous suburb on the eastern side of the fortifications of the two towns (Portsmouth and Portsea) extends from Southsea to Kingston, and is now so closely connected with them by continuous lines of streets that its limits are undefinable. It extends about a mike northwards from Landport Gate to the harbour side beyond Portsea, and occupies more than 200 acres of land a large portion of which was formerly know as Portsea Common. It began to be built about the same time as Portsea Town and not being confined by the fortifications on the east it has rapidly increased its buildings and population during the last thirty years. In 1836 John Burrill Esq., gave 80 acres of land at Wymering and Widley to Winchester College in exchange for 25 acres in Landport called Cherry Garden Field and now closely built upon. As much as 1000 pounds per acre has often been given for land in this part of Portsea Parish. The first buildings erected here were called Half-Way Houses, but the increasing suburb afterwards obtained its present name - Landport, said to have been given to it by Wm Cooper Esq., who was several time Mayor of Portsmouth."
