    3. I have long had a brick wall concerning my grandmother AMELIA EVANS previously SIMPKINS nee WHITE. I found Amelia SIMPKINS on the 1881 census in Easthampstead, Berks She was with her daughter ETHEL AMELIA CHARLOTTE MARY SIMPKINS at the home of HENRY DALLIMORE and his wife Charlotte and said to be sister of the head of household. Her husband JOHN SIMPKINS was not at this address.I am inclined to think that she was more likely to have been the sister-in-law of Henry as she had said her maiden name was WHITE(see below) She was next on the 1891( Portsea..Kingston) census as AMELIA EVANS at the home of DAVID EVANS (my grandfather) together with Ethel Amelia Charlotte Mary EVANS Mable EVANS Albert EVANS Georgina EVANS. I have ascertained that Albert & Georgina were children of David Evans but Mable may have been the daughter of John Simpkins.....I cannot find a birth cert. for her. My mother Amelia Louisa EVANS was born on 28th Dec 1882,but her birth was registered at the same time as the death of her mother AMELIA EVANS in Jan 1883 and her birth given as Jan 1883. On the birth cert her mother's maiden name was given as WHITE and she also stated that her father was GEORGE WHITE (farmer). I cannot find a marriage cert. for Amelia to either John Simpkins nor David Evans nor can I find a birth cert. for her either. To complicate matters still further her daughter (ETHEL)stated on her marriage cert, that her father was GEORGE WHITE not JOHN SIMPKINS ,but on a birth cert of one of her sons she stated that her maiden name was SIMPKINS which was correct, even tho' she was apparently known as EVANS during the lifetime of DAVID EVANS.!!! I don't think I have a brick wall as much as a veritable massive building.! HELP PLEASE!! Sorry didn't mean to shout !

    3. Hi Cynthia - not sure how much background you might have on your mystery girl? I think you are right in thinking she is not the sister of Henry DALLIMORE as in 1861 there is no sister in the DALLIMORE household. The WHITEs are a bit more tricky but if you don't have them I think this could be the family - I'm using sister Charlotte as the key. 1861 Bradford on Avon, Ashley Jonathan WHITE 43 Ag lab. B Bearfield, Wilts Mary 39 Laundress. B Bath, Somerst Eliza 14. B Frankleigh, Wilts Frederick 13 Ag lab. B Stoke, Wilts Maria 6. B Ashley, Wilts James 7. B Ashley Wilts George 3. B Ashley, Wilts William 3 months. B Ashley, Wilts Charlotte 19 Laundress. B Bath, Somerset Ashley seems to be part of Bradford on Avon. Do you suppose Maria might be Amelia? And might this be why she cannot be found under Amelia in the BDM indexes? Curiously there is a marriage of a Maria WHITE in Easthampstead in 1880 but the groom is inconveniently not John SIMPKINS!! but John TUFFIN. Although there could be a mistranscription of course Apologies if you have already explored this lead and found it not to be a connection. 3. Hi Patsy....Many thanks... It looks very much like Amelia's family as I can identify Eliza & Charlotte. Amelia White has been found on 1871 census in South St ,St Georges Hanover Sq . London as a nurserymaid aged 19. She may well have changed her name, or the enumerator in 1861 was a trifle deaf and heard Amelia as Maria. Next door was a butler John Simkins , not SIMPKINS. Wonder if he was the father of her first daughter in 1879??? Just a shot in the dark. Also found at the home of Dallimores in Conkswell,Bradford 1861 census a Winifred WHITE 56 yrs lodger. Charlotte married young Henry from this family!
