Is the description of occupation recorded in an census, that given by the individual or as interpreted by the census taker ? For example an innkeeper is not the same as a beershop keeper and they are not the same as a licensed victualler, but if a socially conscience beershop keeper wanting to impress, described himself as an innkeeper or a licensed victualler, would the census taker so record it or would he use his own discretion ?
