I have a gggrandfather who was killed when he was run over by his wagon on the highway. The newspaper articles of the time all called him a "traveling showman". But on the death certificate, and on his children's birth certificates they call him a 'bricklayer'. I haven't sorted it all out, but I suspect that he was a "traveler" but his wifeish person found "bricklayer" more respectable. For example an innkeeper is not the same as a beershop keeper and they are not the same as a licensed victualler, but if a socially conscience beershop keeper wanting to impress, described himself as an innkeeper or a licensed victualler, would the census taker so record it or would he use his own discretion ?
