    1. STUB(b)INGTON family from Droxford/Soberton/Newtown/Boarhunt/100 Acres

    3. I'm looking for some help with reference to the STUB(b)INGTON marriages in and around DROXFORD. I am looking for any John STUBBINGTONs 1835 + or - 2 years, please? Likewise, a John or Charles SMITH married in Soberton/Newtown 1841 + or - 1 year, also a second marriage 1867 + or - 1 year. According to the 1851 census John SMITH married a Charlotte about 1841 and started to raise a family. 1851 census indicates five children. By the 1861 census he is a widower and his first name is Charles with just three sons with him. 1871 census (he is still Charles) and he is married again (with another Charlotte) with two sons from the first marriage and a 3 year old son from the second. 1881 and it is still Charles and Charlotte with six children from the second marriage and one son from the first. This family continues on in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. My difficulty is that John or Charles was born in France and had an earlier wife and children. His wife appears to have died in childbirth and because of persecution in the Alsace/Lorraine region, he and two earlier children moved to London. His French/German surname appears to have been SCHMITT. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Michael I tried sending this message a month or so ago but I think it must have got lost, so my apologies if it is duplicated.
