Hi Tony & Linda, that was quick, many thanks. I can now dig out the 1841 census and have a look. Can't find Thomas Long on the '51 tonight so will check Navy records at PRO. Does anyone know if the Merchant Navy also used the term 'petty officer' ? cheers Jo Martin
