Hi All, I am hoping someone can help me with a marriage record for John Cawte and Elizabeth Houghton on 14.2.1811 in Alverstoke. I was originally given this information by a fellow researcher who had done his research by physically visiting the parishes rather than relying on internet details. He has John Cawte baptised 26.7.1781 at Botley as the son of Robert Cawte and Elizabeth Paye. John was required to administer the estate of his mother (Elizabeth Paye) who died in 1784. He has John married to Elizabeth Houghton and living with 2 daughters at Mottisfont in 1851. The 1841 census concurs with wife and 2 daughters, although dates of birth for John and Elizabeth do not exactly match. Apparently there is also a 1861 census record which shows John as a retired gate keeper at Winchester. I have only found the 1841 record myself. The problem is that another researcher has also got a John Cawte married to Elizabeth Houghton but their John was born in 1776 and has different parents to mine. Is there any way to check the marriage record to see if it gives the name of John Cawte's father? Is it possible to find the 1851/1861 census records where (apparently) the dates of birth better match the dates we have above? I would be grateful for any advice. Cawte's - for information! It is good to see this interesting name mentioned again. The last time I was able to add my two penn'th was over a year ago on GR. This may not be of relevance to the main question but it is to do with a Cawte marriage on 2 Jun 1906 between Catherine A. Harris and Charles Cawte of Station Road, Corsham, Wilts., at Stroud, Gloucester, Q2 1906, Vol 6a, Page 799. This Charles Cawte, I believe to be, Charles George Cawte born Pitt Winchester, son of George D and Emma. In amongst my Aunts possessions was a delightful and exquisite four folded Wedding Cake Card which would have been given to my Grandmother, Mary Jane Woodman nee Baggott, who was living at Box, near Corsham Wiltshire, at the time. I will be pleased to supply a picture of the card, off list, to any relative of the Cawte's. I would also like to send, on receipt of substantial proof, the actual card to a direct relative of Charles (George) Cawte and Catherine A Harris. I can also share information with regard to the friendship between the happy couple and my grandmother, who was married two years before, and her family circle. Further to my first message, in 1861 John is indexed as CANTE. Living in Winchester as in your posting. Birthplace transcribed as Batley (they don't make it easy!!) and birthdate 1782.
