Has anyone 'out there' come across a JAMES YOUNG, born around 1799/1800, whose father was a Lieutenant on the Royal Navy? On censuses 1851/1871 his place of birth is given as Winchester, but there seems to be no trace of a baptism for him in the available registers for Winchester parishes. I have the certificate for his marriage to Ann Radley in 1840 in St James, Paddington, where his father is given merely as '--Young, Lt in Royal Navy'. It seems possible that James' father had died when he was quite small so he had never heard his first name...? (I have contacted the LMA in the hope of a copy of the parish register entry, in case there are further details) Eldest sons were named 'James Radley Young' right down to 1907 (where these became middle names, though the latest member of the family born 2004 is JRY again) so it is possible that the Lieutenant was also named James. I have have some records of a Lt James Young from the early 1800s - he disappears from the Navy List by 1812 - but no personal details that might give a clue to family. James was a painter, and moved to the north of England, where he died. His greatgrandson moved back to the south, to Dorset, and was designer for Poole Pottery. HIS grandson is a friend who lives near us in Devon, and would love to know more about his ancestors. I have reached a brickwall with the Lieutenant. Any help gratefully received! Wenda
