Francis Payne <[email protected]> wrote: My g-g-grandfather John Payne (d 17/6/1908 at Highcliffe) is not in the GRO death index. He would have been reg at Christchurch. There is a birth of John Payne in the same qtr and a death of Jane Payne (correct age of 73) in the same qtr, both reg at Christchurch. Assuming these are not him, and he has been left out of the index, how would I go about obtaining the details from the original registration office ? Many thanks. Regards Francis Auckland, NZ Hello the gro indexes are taken from the registrar book which would be held in the registrsr office in Christchurch. I is very possible that thhey have got the details wrong. The problem they will not let you see the Register if you apply for a copy of the death cert you have to accept what the Registrar Wrote at the time he may have got the names mixedup. I had a case something like yours and i wanted a copy of the certifacate an dwhn they gave it to me the name was spelt wrong , which questioned and the present registrar said you have toaccept what i have written as that is hoe i have read it .But i knew it was wrong but had to accept. hope this helps you Regards Bernie For FREE online parish register transcriptions visit the Hampshire OPC at www.knightroots.co.uk ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message B.J.Luckham in Ringwood Hampshire U.K.
Hi, If it was me, I would write to Christchurch Registry Office with the details I have got to see if they have got the correct death registered in their books. As Bernie says, the GRO books and index are compiled from these local books. If an error was made when these quarterly returns were put together, John could easily have become Jane. Since you have the date and place of death, it should be a simple job for them to check. Best wishes, Sarah
