I often refer to the Genuki Gazeteer - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/Gazetteer/ - when trying to decipher place names. I can usually make out the first letter or two, or the last few letters, and then if you have the county, you can do a search on partial words/place names. By process of elimination and looking at the original transcript, I've had pretty good success in figuring it out.
