Prior to 1858, the responsibility for wills lay with the Anglican church but in that year passed to the State. It was only then that the National probate Index was established and is the reason why the HRO NPI is not dated earlier - because there is no earlier index. The pre 1858 Hampshire wills are indexed on fiche at the HRO with the actual documents on microfilm there. In addition, wills can be downloaded from Documents Online at the National Archive web site ( the Public Record Office changed its name a few years back!) but is not yet complete.
