Is anyone searching for the family of William and Sarah HARRIS of Hursley, on the road between Winchester and Romsey? He was a blacksmith and they had at least three children: Charlotte, born abt 1814; Thomas, born abt 1815 and Harriet, born abt 1817. As far as I know they were not both from Hursley, and the IGI seems to have people of these names being married at St Michaels' Southampton or at Romsey - I have not yet found them in the parish records and have only very limited time to dedicate to the search. I have a great deal of interesting information about Charlotte and her much later marriage, her 18 children and the fact that she ended up with the daughter of a Duke and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland as an in-law (husband's sister-in-law) , and the sister of Britain's only assassinated Prime Minister as a mother-in-law. It is interesting that the family, one of Hampshire's leading families, effectively disowned the couple but came, in time, to recognise the connection with at least a couple of their children in a bequest from one of the dowagers. If you have a connection, then please let me know - I can find you all sorts of interesting connections to this lady. I also know that about twenty odd years ago, some of her descendants were looking around trying to identify her. I have tried finding them, but I fear that they too have now passed away. John
Hi John I have a "brick wall" William James Harris circa 1823 Poole (according to census records). I believe although cannot prove that his family originated from Southampton. In the 1841 census both William and his brother George were Blacksmiths, in Poole. William died in 1860 and the only clue about him is his marriage certificate to Amelia Stickland which gives his father as John a Mariner. If these fit into your tree it would be Christmas!!!!! Hi John Cold you let me know the other surnames linked with Charlotte, please. My husband's family has many links with landed-gentry in Hampshire and Dorset, so there may be a link. Hi Kate My research came about because I was investigating not my family but the name of my then local pub - The Drummond Arms. The research included visits to Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth local studies libraries and the respective archives, the private archives of the Drummond family at Cadland, and with input of wills and other matters from others who were coincidentally researching for other reasons and approaching from different directions. The object family are the Drummonds, although the particular twig of the branch that was my primary focus was the 'black sheep' that must not be mentioned in polite society. Personally, I believe the story is quite moving and reflects the absolute hypocrisy that existed in society. However, these all seem to have had reasonably happy outcomes - as a good story should. The contact families, who had no direct bearing but came up in research included the Jenkinson's (of whom the Earl of Liverpool was the prominent member) included because of property transactions in the New Forest; the Hans Sloane family (included because of mutual business with the Anglo-Persian Oil company that lead to the construction of both Fawley oil refinery and the railway line that serves waterside)whose family owned Paultons and other parcels of land around Totton and other bits of real estate such as Sloane Square. Through marriage the family were related to many titled families but not usually from Hampshire (Manners, Seymour, Percy, Somerset and others). Of other local families they were married into the Humphrys, of whom William Charles Humphrys, JP was the Chairman of the Southampton Coke and Gas company and who had a town house where the Civic Square currently is in Southampton as well as his main house in Bursledon, where he was de facto squire. The Maturin family who were Protestant Irish and included the Vicar of Lymington, Physicians and Surgeons with bases in Fawley, Hartley Wintney and the Army Medical Service (later Royal Army Medical Corps). The Drummonds were of the family who owned Drummonds Bank (now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland) and were expatriate Scots whose forebears were active in the Stuart cause and indeed lost members of the family in or because of Culloden. I'm unsure whether this answers your question, but it does give you a flavour of some of the connections.
