Hi, Just a question -- using the old roads, circa 1894, how many miles and how long would it take to travel by horse n' cart from Southsea to Midhurst? Thanks kindly, Edna ~ Ottawa
Well Midhurst is about 30 Miles from Southsea so taking it that a horse walks about the pace of a human at 2 mph non stop it would take approx 15 hrs I Think LOL Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "liverpud" <[email protected]> To: "Hampshire-L"
Edna - Unless you're sure he went by horse and cart, he may have used the very good railway service between the two towns, either via Petersfield or via Chichester. My guess is that with a horse and cart, it would have meant an overnight stop, as 30 miles is quite a way for a horse with a load. 30 miles would have been a good distance just on horseback. There are some pretty steep hills between the two places, whichever way he went.
