Dear David Thank you very much indeed for all that helpful surname information, and especially for your trouble in setting it all out. Unfortunately very little of it relates to my particular people, but never mind – information often comes handy when you least expect it to do so. Here is what I have established which may be of some interest to you or someone else, some time in the future. BURNISTON: I am well acquainted with the N Yks branch of this name – definitely my folk. A group of them migrated to Hants early 1800s and from then on used BURNISTON and BANNISTER interchangeably. BARTLETT: Main interest is Henry born Southampton c1840, son of William and Mary, who I believe came from Brighton. The entire family seem to have had an aversion to registration. CULL: My only connections here are John, married Jane Harrison, and daughter Jane b1788 South Stoneham. I know of no other members of the family so some of those you have listed could very well be connected. FLUX: We believe this branch of the family came from the Comte de Fleurs from Normandy who settled on the IOW after being released from prison there following the Battle of Agincourt 1415. GILLEY/GILLY: I have a Devon contact but my family is definitely not connected, coming from Berwickshire as GILLIE, and possibly earlier as GILLES. LANHAM: Yes, definitely interchangeable with Langham. All of mine were in Southampton by 1810. No information further back. SEALY/SEALEY: Interesting – I shall chase up the W. Somerset angle. SHORT: Mine were all in Portsea/Southampton since 1790. WHISTLER: I have never come across that meaning, but it makes sense. They died out in Hants after the mid-1800s, thanks to females and non-marrying males. Once again, David, many thanks for your work. Much appreciated. Hi Dorothy Noticed your reference to Lanhams in Southampton c1810. Do you have any interest in William Lanham, married Susannah Feltham, children William and Mary Ann.
