    3. My maiden name is BARKER and I've researched my BARKERS in Alberta, Canada. I know they came from the UK at some point, but not sure when - I think in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I'd be interested in some of the names you're researching. 3. Dear Sharon, BARKER is from the Norman French occupation berchier 'shepherd' so is, as you can imagine, very common. You would need to find a passenger list (your timescale is luckily after they became common) somewhere to prove which port of embarkation they set out from. In the 1891 Census, most Barkers were concentrated in Yorkshire (where it appeared shortly after the Conquest), West Essex and South Cambridgeshire - however they were, and are, to be found everywhere, BUT very few in Hampshire then. Does the fact that you e-mailed the Hants. list with a number of places near the Wiltshire border mean that you have some information about the Barker's English roots? Regards, David

    3. Thanks David for the info....unfortunately, no I do not have any info re: Barkers in the Hants area - I was just surprised to see my maiden name pop up on the list! The Barkers that I'm researching were in Alberta as early as 1888 and possibly earlier. I'll have to check out the ships lists to see if I can track them down, but like you said, there are LOTS of barkers, and finding the right person/couple might be tricky. I'm on the Hants list due to researching the COX, HOLLAND and HILL families from around Fleet, Crookham and Farnham (surrey).
