The messages about gardener ancestors have been interesting. I have several gardeners in my family tree, they all moved around the country a lot and it would seem that there was a network of employers and employees who would refer people on. For instance one of mine had obviously moved to work at the same garden as his older brother. Employers also advertised in gardening publications of the time. An interesting book 'the Head Gardeners' by Toby Musgrave (pub 2007) is well worth reading for more background.
