Trying to locate a first Marriage of Margaret Jane Ferris (b.c. 1856) to Anthony McLaughlin circa 1885 Portsea. Couldn't find it in Knightroots site. Thank you, Edna - Ottawa
Hi Moses and Sarah Good were both tried for receiving stolen goods. Moses was found guilty on 15th January 1852 and sent to prison for 12 months Sarah was found not guilty. Hope this helps Ann
I wonder if someone could expand further on this announcement in the Hampshire Telegraph of June 5 1880, Issue 4992: On 28 May 1880 a Mr. John Ferris age 38 years died. Thank you, Edna - Ottawa
Many thanks to Fionnghal for a quick reply and copy of the page. Moses was convicted and sentence to 12 months on January 15 1852. (The next entry in the book is for his daughter who was found not guilty on the same charge.) If anyone can suggest where the sentence might have been served I would appreciate the help. TIA Kenneth Scott Dunedin, Florida
Ancestry shows my great great great grandfather Moses Good as being convicted on 15 January 1852. It seems that my level of membership does not allow me to see the image of the record which might indicate additional information such as the crime and date of release. If SKS has a suitable level of access and can forward the image to me it would be much appreciated TIA Kenneth Scott Dunedin, Florida
I'm afraid it doesn't really say very much but has a Sarah Good listed alongside him which may be useful. Have you tried the Old Bailey? http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/ You might find their case amongst the records. No, I can't. Sorry Edna. I used findmypast.com. I first tried to find Eliza - used 1845 + or - 2 years and allowed variants of both names. Then I tried to find Sarah Ann with advanced search to allow Eliza in the household. No luck there either. Along the way I found a KNIGHT family with the youngest child being transcribed as surname KEIGHT. Worth thinking about! In your case, maybe the surname is not Knight... or she was not registered especially if no father is mentioned. Good luck and I hope someone else can find them. Dawn you won't find Hampshire on the 1851 on Find My past as the 1851 isn't complete yet. If you put in a surname and look at the counties in the box it gives the ones which are complete. Hope this helps, Linda and Tony

Hi Ruth, All is well and hope the same for you too. You sent me a photo some time ago but perhaps you have forgotten. I do have some photos taken in May 2004 when Ken and I visited along with two dear Hampshire friends. What a lovely village once home of my KNIGHTs. The messages about gardener ancestors have been interesting. I have several gardeners in my family tree, they all moved around the country a lot and it would seem that there was a network of employers and employees who would refer people on. For instance one of mine had obviously moved to work at the same garden as his older brother. Employers also advertised in gardening publications of the time. An interesting book 'the Head Gardeners' by Toby Musgrave (pub 2007) is well worth reading for more background. Hi Francis, Some of them became mechanics to fix the new fangled machines! Leigh, Sydney (over the ditch). From: Francis Payne <francisp@xtra.co.nz> Subject: [HAM] Ag Labs & Gardeners The TV show Victorian Farm how, by the 1880s, machinery was drastically reducing the number of ag labs needed per farm. So what did these people who had been, or would have been,?ag labs do ??Seems like they became gardeners instead.
I wouldn't agree that "farm servants" means something different than "farm workers". The term "servants" had a broader meaning in Victorian times than it has today. Railway workers were referred to as "railway servants" -- as in the name of their trade union, the "Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants"//.
