    1. [HAM] Gertrude Harriet Le SANTO 1890-1961
    2. Rebecca
    3. Hi, I'm hoping someone can help unravel a puzzle. Gertrude Harriet Le SANTO was the daughter of John Harry Le SANTO and Emily Harriet McDUFF. She was born in 1890 in Portsmouth. She married William David MORGANS in Portsmouth in 1911. She had two sons, William David Lloyd born 1913 in Portsmouth and Ramon S born in 1926 in Portsmouth. This is where it starts getting interesting. Ramon was apparently registered twice: Births Sep 1926 Collingridge Ramon A Le Santo Portsmouth 2b 689 Morgans Ramon S Le Santo Portsmouth 2b 689 If you search on Ramon COLLINGRIDGE you also get: Collingridge Ramon A Le Santo Portsmouth 2b See D 47 The certificate for the above entry in 1947 says the parents are Alfred Thomas Baker COLLINGRIDGE and Gertrude Harriet MORGANS formerly Le SANTO now the wife of Alfred Thomas Baker COLLINGRIDGE. Both parents sign the register and Ramon's date of birth is given as 21 July 1926. He died in 1957, age 30. I know a child can't be registered twice and if it is, the first registration is the one that stands. I also know a child's birth can be re-registered if the parents were unmarried at the time of the birth but married subsequently providing the parents could have married at the time of the birth, for instance neither were married to someone else at the time of the birth. Gertrude and Alfred married in 1939, the same year that Gertrude's eldest son, William David Lloyd married Rose Emily BAULF. William DL married as William David Lloyd COLLINGRIDGE, not as a MORGANS. He retained COLLINGRIDGE as his surname for the rest of his life. He died in 1983. I suspect he was also Alfred's son but cannot prove it. Gertrude's first husband appears to have married again in 1938. I have not found a divorce up to 1937. What I would like to know please is if there is any way to find out if there was a divorce after 1937 and also what papers would have been around that might have reported a divorce or any marital misbehaviour. I can take both Gertrude's and Alfred's lines back another 150 years and I also know the descent of Gertrude's sons. I'm just interested in what Gertrude did or didn't do and if there is any way to confirm my suspicions to some degree. Rebecca

    3. I use Ancestry as the main resource and Findmypast for the 1911 census (6 mths sub). Findmypast searching for BMD takes a lot longer than Ancestry, it brings up all the names for the qrt beginning with the same letter, rather than the name you seek. I also can not find my ancestor in 1911, so they must have been transcribed incorrectly. Ancestry has faults too in transribing but I can usally find what I am looking for easier then fmp. Fmp does offer price reduction for subsequent renewals.

    3. Hi All I too have both, findmypast basically for the 1911 census, if Ancestry had that then I would just have Ancestry, of the two I find Ancestry to be far the most useful. Yours Theresa Ringwood, Hampshire

    3. I have a Thomas THOMAS (b abt 1777) marrying Sarah DIMICK (b abt 1776) in or around Ringwood (possibly Ellingham) on 21 Oct 1798. They had 3 children (Stephen abt 1815, Eliza 1814 and Christopher 1812). Thomas and Sarah are my ggg grandparents. I'm looking for parents of both Thomas and Sarah. Does anyone have access to the Ellingham parish records to do a lookup for me, as both were probably residents there. There's nothing that I can see in the IGI that makes sense. Thanks. Alan in Brisbane

    3. There's a book about a Lettice Sweetapple by Peter Fowler (P.J.) which concerns an area not far from Andover as I recall, this could shed some light. > > > Is anyone on this list researching the name Sweetapple ? > > I came across these in the register of St Marys, Andover.

    3. Actually I can see a use for both. I have, far the second time, findmypast with the 1911 census which is great. But I could not find my family in one or two censuses etc - they were fund for e by a friend with Ancestry. I then searched on the address - surname FIRTH was transcribed as Frost, Jas F was wrongly transcribed as Jos T, etc. I also found Tamar - female - transcribed once as James female.. but Ancestry has the same sorts of problems, just in different areas! Ancestry has perhaps more things, those London metropolitan archives on line are a good point, as are the Australian electoral rolls. If you can only afford one at a time, maybe make the change this year and see what you think. Dawn - Melbourne Australia >>>>>>>>>>> Just coming up to renewing my subs to Ancestry. Dose anyone have any particular opinions regarding preference of Ancestry or findmypast? 3. Hiya Helen, I live in Havant and know that most of the records are held at Portsmouth Record Office. There is a really good local history group too which has a website http://www.stauntoninfo.co.uk/4598.html I find this a great help. Don't forget to check the nearby parishes of Bedhampton and Rowlands Castle plus Emsworth and Warblington when researching Havant. 3. I would suggest the Hampshire records office in Winchester as Havant is in that County, but the West Sussex records office in Chichester may also be usefull given Havants close proximity to West Sussex. 3. Hi, I wonder if someone could advise as to the nearest, (or the best), place to Petersfield to go to find out about a Havant family. The family is HOLTON, I've traced our family back to an Edward b.c.1760 ( married to Mary LILLIETT, various spellings),who according to the 1834 Warblington voters list was residing in Havant where most of the following generations were matched, hatched & dispatched. I have also managed to trace other HOLTON's back to Fordingbridge in the 1600s; when in 1688 a William HOLTON married a Phoebe BROOMAN at Portchester and this couple raised their family in Havant, (William, Thomas, Edward & Elizabeth) between 1689 -1700. Of these children Thomas married Elizabeth GRIGGS in 1711 and raised a family of 12 in Havant between 1712 - 1730 and this is where I'm stuck, one of these children is almost certainly the parent or possibly grandparent of our Edward. I have wills as well as the usual B, M & D plus census where applicable from various on-line resources including the wonderful 'Knightroots' site but seem to have exhausted these now. I should add that I have problems with travelling but my son has agreed to come especially to try to get this link hooked up with the rest of the family but does need to know where to go and which documents are likely to be the most useful to look at. Thank you for reading all this and hope one of you knowledeable list members can advise. Helen icedancer@mail.com

    1. [HAM] Lloyd G. WRIGHT
    2. Elizabeth Wright
    3. Hi Listers, I have just received the death certificate for Lloyd G. WRIGHT. He died in 1973 in Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, Alton, Hants. He had lived for 10 or 12 years with a woman not his wife although he and his wife never divorced. To the best of my knowledge he and his wife Florence were never reconciled. However, on his death she was responsible for his funeral arrangements and registering his death. Under section 6, Occupation and usual address of deceased it says: Omnibus driver, 98 Manor Road, Alton, Hants. Name & surname of informant Florence Ellen Wright usual address 98 Manor Road, Alton, Hants. In the circumstances this seems odd. I know his address was somewhere else in Alton because my husband corresponded with his father. Any ideas as to why Florence would say he lived with her. Could it have anything to do with receiving a widow's pension? Lloyd was 58 at his death Florence was 62. Elizabeth

    3. Hi Linda I have Sweetapple in west Hampshire/Dorset and virtually all the genealogies on the net for that branch of the family are copies of my original tree! I hope I got it right!! There was a lady who I corresponded with 12 or 15 years ago about the name but I don't seem to have her contact details now alas, that might be who you are looking for I will try to find her name and address but am not sure I still have it. If I can be any help with our branch please get in touch Yours Theresa Ringwood, Hampshire. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Linda" <linda.elliott@xtra.co.nz> Sent: Monday, April 19, 2010 9:58 PM To: <HAMPSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Subject: [HAM] Sweetapple > Hi > Is anyone on this list researching the name Sweetapple ? 3. Linda, Try going to places like Rootsweb, Genforum and Ancestry (if you have a subscription), and looking at submitted family trees, and surname boards and mailing lists. Rootsweb for example has 672 Sweetapple names, Some may connect. But I always advise double checking data. I've seen too many errors, and made a few myself. Peter
