    1. Re: [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Does anyone hav any suggestions?
    2. Hi Jon The simplest answer is probably one word..........poverty. Presumably prior to Elizabeth being widowed, they lived in South Stoneham parish - with 4 children to support, Elizabeth managed to get work at the vicarage but not enough money to feed and house the children...and no matter how much the Vicar liked her dumplings, there would probably not have been room at the vicarage. Therefore the 3 youngest went to the workhouse - possibly temporarily until Elizabeth got on her feet whilst the eldest being aged 12 was old enough to earn his keep and was therefore billeted at his Aunt's house. Hope this helps Linda & Tony

Look: Richard Aubrey Veck and Elizabeth Bulpett Marriage April 22, 1784 Old Alresford Henry Aubrey Veck chr April 16, 1785 Bishops Waltham - this is the chap who as you know became the incumbant at St John's, Forton, and for whom Charlotte Albray's mother Elizabeth Harvey was working in 1861. Eliza Veck chr April 4, 1789 Bishops Waltham Harriot Veck chr April 30, 1791 Bishops Waltham Ann Whitear Veck chr March 26, 1796 Bishops Waltham *** GEORGE VECK chr October 20, 1797 Bishops Waltham *** - Did he take on his father's 2nd name as his surname? The birth year is absolutely smack on for the 1851 census entry, with the usual 1 year apparent discrepancy! there is a marriage of a George Veck to Mary Coward at TITCHFIELD on January 13, 1827 on the IGI, is this him? He was in Fareham in 1843, we know that much. Could this be why I've been getting nowhere? Was his name really Veck? It would certainly add up why there has been such a brick wall on this family's beginnings. If you have any records from Bishops Waltham that may help on the Veck and aubery side of things, please do let me know.

    1. Re: [Ham] Emigration
    2. Dear Bob - Just a quick response- What were the ages ( and names) of your ancestors who went to Aust. & Canada?? Between 1860 - 1925 (approx) hundreds of thousands of young boys and girls of all ages (home children) were sent to work in Canada & Aust. as farm workers, maids etc and to be adopted in some cases. There is a rootsweb List for British Home Children which has a tremendous amount of research done ( and listings) on these children. If they went as adults - in Canada - the 1901- 1906 (some provinces) and recently 1911 census are now online as well as the veterans of WWI and you may find some info there. If this is the case - let me know & I will send you the web-sites if you need them. sincerely Mary Margaret (Canada)

    1. Re: [Ham] Froyle parish records-PRIOR
    2. Dear Lynne, Any PRIOR names look familiar?? One of my ggggrandfather's (Thomas DICKSON of Prospect House Southampton) daughters - Jemima married a Thomas MURRAY-PRIOR in Millbrook, Hants 27 Nov. 1812. He was born in Rathdownery, Queens Ireland but seems to have lived in Hampshire for some time as he died 19 Jul.1864 - Windsor Terrace, Southsea, Hants. Two of their children Jemima Frances Sophia (born in Shirley, Hants) and Louisa Elizabeth Catherine lived to old age - Louisa living part of the time in Southsea. I do not believe Louisa PRIOR (she dropped the "MURRAY" at some point) was ever married - do not know about Jemima. In letters Louisa mentions her many neices & nephews in Australia but do not know if they were children of her sister (Jemima PRIOR) or step-siblings - as her father had a 2nd marriage (Elizabeth Skynner) and a son (Thomas Lodge MURRAY-PRIOR) from it born (1819) & lived in Australia. His brother (unmarried) William Agustus MURRAY-PRIOR was born in Belgium - 1821 and buried Portsmouth, Garrison Cemetery Hamps. I know Louisa went by the single name PRIOR - not sure about the others. Not even sure if it really was a hyphenated name - or only a middle name which all family members used & was incorrectly written as a double name by a LDS contributer. Any chance you know anything about this PRIOR family from your research? regards, Mary Margaret

    1. HINTON Family Reunion in Christchurch
    2. Susan Moziar
    3. I'm off to England on Friday so I am unsubbing temporarily. Thought listers might be interested to know that I have been researching my maiden name (HINTON) since 2001 and since then have made contact with over 25 individuals who descend from this line. The earliest that I have been able to trace back is James HINTON b. 1657 to John and Sarah HINTON in Wilton. Two brothers, George and James HINTON, married two GAWLER sister, Elizabeth and Martha. Many of the HINTON descendants in Christchurch descend from these families. We have organized a Family Re-union in Christchurch on August 16th and we have over 20 people coming. There are more but they live too far to attend. Among the names from Christchurch, in addition to HINTON: BURRY, COAKES, BROWNEN, BISHOP, GAILER, PITMAN, SELLWOOD, TREVIS, WIFFEN, JEFFERIS, JAMES, JEANS, SMITH, PRATT, HILLS, WELLMAN Please contact me off-list if any of these names ring a bell. Best Wishes, Susan Moziar Guelph, Ontario Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards.
