Hello all, I have recently found my great uncle, the proverbial black sheep, on the 1881 census. He is a convict in H M Convict Prison Portsmouth. His occupation is given as Commercial Clerk. His family 'persuaded' him to go to America two years later, where incidentally, he did very well for himself indeed, in Insurance and then Banking. That makes me wonder if his crime was something like fraud or swindling, or am I being too melodramatic. Can someone please tell me if it is possible to check the prison records to find out just what his crime and sentence were. Regards Jackie
I would like to be able to find a birth for Andrew McCalpen thought to have been christened in st.Mary's Portsea in 1776. where would St.Mary's records be so that I can confirm this please. Thanks Lynne
Keep looking on the internet at used book retailers, e.g. abe (put abe into Google and click on the website). It's a website of several hundred dealers whose stock is continually changing. Just a little note by way of a big thank you to Edna for posting up the information on her friend's Cornwall Constabulary transcription, which appeared in last month's threads. Since reading Edna's submission, I've been popping back regularly to Liz Newbery's site and this morning found an entry for one of my "sticky enders". Liz posted back to me within the hour and, amid all the valuable service records, there was that crucial bit of information I'd been searching for - his date of death. In this person's case I'd figured out that he must have died sometime between 1871 and 1881 and the GRO Indices had come up with 4 likely contenders. With the information Liz has given me I'll be able to go ahead and order the correct certificate straight away, without having to take pot luck first. So, on top of everything else Liz has actually saved me some money!! To anyone else who had an ancestor in the Cornwall Constabulary between 1857 and 1967 I can only say "Give it a go". Its a great site and Liz is doing a grand job, updating her list all the time. I've already sent a thank you note to Liz and this one goes to Edna & Ken. Warm regards, Marie
Hello Lynne birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1837 and also have just checked on www.familysearch.org on the IGI for Andrew McCALPEN christening in 1776 and nothing there under batch no 062612 for the years 1774-1804 for St Mary's Portsea. Sorry it's not a positive response Linda and Tony I would like to be able to find a birth for Andrew McCalpen thought to have been christened in st.Mary's Portsea in 1776. where would St.Mary's records be so that I can confirm this please.
In a message dated 06/09/05 08:27:52 GMT Daylight Time, help@productsupport.familysearch.org writes: Thank you for your e.mail reference the above. About 80 percent of the information in the International Genealogical Index is submitted by patrons. The other data is from various sources, including extraction. The IGI on FamilySearch Internet is updated regularly as temples transmit ordinance information to us. Some temples transmit information less frequently than others. From the above you can see that we cannot be more specific but do hope that this information goes towards answering your query. Hence be cautious patron submissions /IGI information should always be of as many sources as possible, check and double check. Take care,Linda and Tony
I have information that there exists an allegation for a marriage licence in Hampshire in the Registry of the Bishop of Winchester for Daniel Spearing of Wymering, husbandman and Ann Stares of Southwick dated 18th April 1733. Can some kind soul please advise what I can do with this information? Will the allegation (if the document is available) tell me anything more than what is recorded above? Is 18th April 1733 the date of the marriage? Where would it have taken place? Winchester? Lorraine NSW Australia

Hi Edna Don't know if this will help at all? From the 1861 census of Porchester: George Ross abt 1816 Fareham, Hampshire, England Head Portchester Hampshire Mary Ann Ross abt 1821 Wymering, Hampshire, England Wife Portchester Hampshire Eliza Ross abt 1848 Portchester, Hampshire, England Daughter Portchester Hampshire Thomas Ross abt 1849 Wymering, Hampshire, England Son Portchester Hampshire Emma Ross abt 1853 Portchester, Hampshire, England Daughter Portchester Hampshire Henry Ross abt 1856 Portchester, Hampshire, England Son Portchester Hampshire Fanny Ross abt 1859 Portchester, Hampshire, England Daughter Portchester Hampshire Elizabeth Ross abt 1860 Portchester, Hampshire, England Daughter Portchester Hampshire Also, on the IGI I found the birth and christening details you mentioned, and when I selected both of those, then clicked "prepare records" it told me only one had been selected as the other was duplicated etc, so those entries do match up. Hi Gail You could try searching Ebay. And they also have a 'Want it Now' section where you put down the details of what you want, price you'd prefer to pay, etc, someone lists it, you get informed, and then it's entirely up to you whether you want to purchase it. you may think it's too high a start bid, etc. But you are under no obligation to buy. Do you know anyone who uses Ebay? You could ask them to give you a few pointers. Hope you strike lucky! Hi, Thanks for speedy response folks. Yes that's him. IGI says bapt. 10th Feb. 1850 so probably the date was a little smudged. Looks more and more like a family take-over of Portchester. Dear People on this mailing list. I am looking for any information of the following: Paul Lavington Born 1744 married Martha Bakingham in 1793 in Houghton, Hampshire. I found Paul's mother's as mary Lavington who died 1808 in Houghton, Hampshire. I do not now who her husband was. I found Pauls death in the Bishop transcripts showing that he died at the age of 85 years but I do not know if he was born in Houghton, hampshire. I am not sure of where to look for any more information. Maybe I have just hit a brick wall with this side of my family. I f any one out there can help in any way I would be very grateful. Kind regards ' Jean Parker
