    3. Hi, Saw someone on the Hampshire list looking for the debtors in his/her family... Just reading here in Practical Family History Aug. 2005 issue (a very good magazine by the way) -- a tip for locating info on gaoling (jailing) debtors - Local record offices usually hold records in their quarter sessions' papers relating to the process of gaoling debtors. 1. The RATHMELL Family
    2. J P NIXEY
    3. Hi all, Is anyone researching the RATHMELL family? From Free BMD I have the marriage of Elizabeth Albray to someone with the surname of Rathmell at Gosport in 1913. This ties up with the marriage of my wife's grandfather in 1918 which was witnessed by an Elizabeth Rathmell. Checking the 1901 census, there was a family of Rathmells living in Portsea, headed by Charlotte Rathmell who was born about 1854 in Portsmouth. Her children were William born about 1878 in Portsmouth, George born about 1882 in Ireland, Caleb born about 1885 in Portsmouth, Sarah born about 1887 in Portsmouth, and Joseph born about 1892 in Portsmouth. I have found the death index for charlotte at Portsmouth in 1910 aged 55, as well as the death index of a william Caleb Rathmell in 1899 aged 48 who I presume is Charlotte's husband, and also some birth and marriage indexes for their children. I have not been able to find the family in ancestry's 1891 census yet though. Would dearly love to hear from anyone with connections to this family. 2. Anita Brown
    3. Hi Liz, If you have the naval service record, where does it say Charles was at the relevant dates if not those 2 ships? He could be at an accounting base like HMS Victory and perhaps on loan to the Flirt & Quail at those times. Best wishes Anita Original message: Dear listers: I have 3 documents for Charles Terdrey: 1907, his marriage at Portsmouth, which states his residence as "HMS Flirt"; 1908, birth of son at Portsmouth, which states his occupation as "Steward, HMS Quail" and then his navy seaman service records which lists the ships served on from 1906 to 1928. My question is: why dont these ships named on cert: Flirt and Quail appear in his seamans's service?...other ships such as Hecla, Blenheim, Dido, Blake, etc appear.

    3. Thank you, Linda and Tony, and also Edna for your replies. Edna referred me to the Streetmap site which shows the names adjacent to each other. I had looked in my two huge maps books, neither of which showed Landport, so I wondered if the name had been changed. Throughout the censuses my man put either Landport or Portsea as his place of birth, but I have just found another one saying Portsmouth, so I am now happy that they are all the same man. 3. Hi Alan - not much light to shed but I note that Annie and Walter both spent most of their young years with grandmother Diana DYETT/PRESTON. This might suggest that Sarah and Annie both married but left their illegitimate child with her, or that they came to some other 'end'. I have searched the censuses for likely 'culprits' but nothing definite. As DYETT is an unusual name, a search of the BDM indexes at a family history centre might be fruitful, if you haven't already done this of course.. Sorry not to be more help. Cheers, Patsy - New Zealand. > I'm looking for Sarah DYETT (b. 1835) and daughter Annie Eliza (b. 1855). > Both had children but no husbands (Annie had Walter John in 1872). 2. DAVID PARKER
    3. This from White's 1859 Directory. "LANDPORT, the central and most populous suburb on the eastern side of the fortifications of the two towns (Portsmouth and Portsea) extends from Southsea to Kingston, and is now so closely connected with them by continuous lines of streets that its limits are undefinable. It extends about a mike northwards from Landport Gate to the harbour side beyond Portsea, and occupies more than 200 acres of land a large portion of which was formerly know as Portsea Common. It began to be built about the same time as Portsea Town and not being confined by the fortifications on the east it has rapidly increased its buildings and population during the last thirty years. In 1836 John Burrill Esq., gave 80 acres of land at Wymering and Widley to Winchester College in exchange for 25 acres in Landport called Cherry Garden Field and now closely built upon. As much as 1000 pounds per acre has often been given for land in this part of Portsea Parish. The first buildings erected here were called Half-Way Houses, but the increasing suburb afterwards obtained its present name - Landport, said to have been given to it by Wm Cooper Esq., who was several time Mayor of Portsmouth."
