    3. Peter, The entry cannot be looked up, because the register containing Vernham Dean baptisms 1701-1800, marriages 1700-1754, and burials 1701-1813 is missing. The marriage entry in Family Search is a patron submission, and may be speculative. 2. Maureen Shepherd
    3. Hi, For all those interested in the release of the 1851 census. I contacted Ancestry to ask when the 1851 census was likely to be released and the following is the response I received. Regards Maureen We apologize for any inconvenience. At this time we are working to complete the posting of information in the 1841 & 1851 Uk Censuses. We do not have an official release schedule for future postings. Certain information may not currently be available due to varying issues. These include (but are not limited to) research, rescanning, and quality assurance matters. We will complete the posting of this database as quickly as possible, but there will be some delay before the entire project is completed. Thank you for your patience. PLEASE NOTE: In addition to the above issues governing when more information is added to this database, this data is supplied by a third party. 3. Does anybody have access to the Hampshire Quarter sessions for Portsmouth, who could kindly look up a query for me? I suspect my great-grandfather George ROFEFY (1844-1886) possibly went bankrupt or became a debtor. He died in 1886 but still had his Pork Butchers Shop in Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth in 1881(Census). So this would have occurred somewhere between 1881-6. Thanks in advance. Cliff Roffey

    1. Crossing the Atlantic
    2. Edna
    3. A friend sent me this interesting excerpt from the West Briton on 23rd December 1853: Cheers, Edna - Ottawa >>>>>>>>>> DEATH ON THE ATLANTIC. The ravages of disease among the emigrant passengers, who cross the Atlantic at this season, are frightful, and almost rival the horrors of the famous "middle passage." Nearly every ship that arrives at New York reports a large loss of living cargo, averaging from twenty to thirty per cent, of all the souls on board. There is no doubt, as we learn from the physicians at Quarantine, that these deaths are mostly occasioned by the cholera, but we think that there can be as little doubt that the disease is generated by the ill-condition of our emigrant vessels. The mode of crowding human beings of both sexes and all ages promiscuously like animals destined for market, between the decks of emigrant ships, without ventilation, without sufficient water, without proper food, or beds, or the necessary care, amid filth and stenches accumulating from the beginning to the end of the voyage, and with the weakness caused by scanty diet and sea-sickness to predispose and prepare for fever the whole wretched mass, - all this is a disgrace to our progressive civilisation and to the nineteenth century, and it is one, too, which America has to pay for dearly in the end. A writer in the New York Tribune, describing a Liverpool ship in which he was a passenger, says that it was impossible to get anything cooked with any degree of cleanliness, or even cooked at all, so that women with families of young children often had to wait several hours each morning before they could procure a morsel of food to appease the hunger of their exhausted and fevered little ones, gives us the following revolting picture:- One of the most vitally important requisites on the emigrant ship are clean and commodious water-closets. On board this ship these necessaries were situated on each side of the forward hatchway, very near to the cooking galleys. They had just been erected by the ship's carpenter, and were composed of rough pine boards. They were ranged three together on each side of the deck, one being appropriated to the use of female, the other to the male passengers. They were about twenty inches in width and five feet in height. The interior of each consisted of a single crossbar, and a wooden shoot leading out through the bulwarks. So ill-adapted and incommodious were these places that in rough weather, or when the ship was rolling, the inmates were often thrown through the frail door, and precipitated upon the deck. The doors would thus get knocked off their hinges, and the carpenter would let them stay knocked off. It was almost impossible to escape defilements in their places, even with all the advantages of the most favourable weather. There was no supply of water to keep the channels clean, and every time a wave broke against the ship's side, or she plunged, the accumulated filth would be washed out upon deck. This often occurred when there were several of these places occupied, and the inmates presented the most pitiable spectacles. The stench at all times emitted from these places was not unlike that which would arise from two laden night-carts anchored on each side of the deck. So totally unfit were these houses for the use for which they were designed, that even the most reckless and vermin-crawling passenger entered them with loathing. The case of the male passengers is distressing, but that of the females were wretched beyond description. The effluvia arising from these places, together with their general repulsiveness, is undoubtedly a pregnant cause of much of the disease which prevails upon emigrant ships." With such facts before us, the wonder is not that cholera and ship-fever destroy thirty per cent of the emigrants, but that so many escape. The same kind of miscalled accommodation on land would breed a contagion, and what they must be their effects on ship-board, where, under the most favourable circumstances, the condition is sufficiently disagreeable and unwholesome?

My 3rd gr grandfather John Ponting, born abt 1785 in St Mary Bourne (from the 1851 census) married a Mary ? around the 1811 era, and had a daughter Elizabeth in Enham abt. 1812. Mary was born in Little London abt 1781 (also from the 1851 census). 1. John GILBERT b 1806 Stockbridge
    2. Steve Jones
    3. Hi everyone! My ancestor, Hannah Taylor GILBERT was born about 1820 Stockbridge Hampshire according to census. There is a baptism at Stockbridge for Hannah Taylor Gilbert, but her parents are Richard Taylor Gilbert and Jane (nee Hoar). Richard and Jane are living in Edmonston London in 1851. He was born Portsea, a retired Coal Merchant about 1778. Baptism entry for Hannah Taylor Gilbert in Stockbridge dated Sept 21 1820 by Rev Richard Taylor Entry is clearly marked to say born February 08 1817 baptised privately Feb 21 1817 On Hannah Taylor Gilbert's marriage cert in 1840 to George Henry TINDALL Kennington Surrey, she stated her father was John GILBERT, hotel keeper. A witness at the marriage was an Elizabeth Sincock GILBERT. An Elizabeth Sinnock Gilbert died 1855 Greenwich on the GRO indexes. I have found a family in the 1851 census of Hackney which seems to be related. John Gilbert 44yrs born Stockbridge Merchant Linen Woollens Mary Ann 47yrs born City of London Mary Ann 20yrs born City of London Emily Taylor 18yrs born Kent Rd, Surrey Clara Taylor 16yrs born Islington MDX John G Gilbert 14yrs born Islington William Hoar 19yrs born Portsmouth Medical Student Elizabeth Hylor 25yrs born Chelsea House Servant I cannot find a marriage for John and Mary Ann Gilbert, but wondering if anyone can check the Stockbridge PRs? It would seem that Hannah Taylor Gilbert might be a tad old to be the child of John, but why would she state her father was John unless, he raised her after her father died etc. Would love to know the connection between these families. Also, another clue is that an Adeline Cross born about 1841 Chatham Surrey (niece) is staying with the John Gilbert family in 1861 census where they are living at Leyton Essex. None of the girls have married by this stage. IGI: Adeline Cross d/o Thomas Cross and Harriet Clara bp 18 March 1841 St Leonards Streatham Also, Emily Taylor Gilbert died Sept Q 1907 Fareham aged 77yrs There is also another John Gilbert living in Stockbridge in 1851: John Gilbert aged 59 gardener born Stockbridge Mary Ann Gilbert wife aged 58 John son unmarried aged 21 Blacksmith Charles son also unmarried aged 17 Ostler Henry so also unmarried aged 14 scholar Can anyone help to sort out these GILBERT families/ I woul dlove to know how they are connected. Thanks for any assistance. Best wishes, Judy Jones.
