    1. BAKE not BAKER
    2. Dorothy Morrissey
    3. Regarding this mistranscription - if you enter three letters followed by an asterisk (ie, BAK*) this can sometimes help. Certainly works on Ancestry anyway. I have found several mistranscribed names this way. Just recently, found my WARMANs actually written very clearly by the enumerator as WARMOUTH! To make matters worse mother Keziah was entered as Therezia! Without that asterisk method I would never have found them. HTH. 3. Hi Patsy, Thanks for your email. Unfortunately I can find nothing out about Eliza Duffey. She did have two sisters that were in the House of Industry and I have managed to find them and I know that Eliza had a child Walter in 1852 there also but do not know where she was in 1851. Most of the tobacco is grown at Myrtleford just a few kms away from Wangaratta but there are now lots of wineries up and running. 3. Hi Brenda - I didn't see any Eliza DUFFEY born Woolwich but there is an Emma DUFFEY born Woolwich at the House of Industry, Carisbrook in 1851. this is in the district of Newport, Isle of Wight. As their first child appears to have been born Newport, Isle of Wight, this could be a link? Sorry if it's a false lead. Regards, Patsy - New Zealand PS I visited Wangaratta some years ago to research the local tobacco-growing industry. Is that where you are? 1. Bellingers of Portsea
    2. Gill Jones
    3. Hi Kathleen Many thanks for confirming my theory. I obviously was pursuing the wrong Bellingers (South Hayling). Hi Steve Thanks for the advice. Yes I have come across examples of people giving the wrong ages but in this instance I was fairly certain that I had unearthed two families in the area with daughters about the same age and with the same name ... not unusual I know ... and I was following the wrong line. That can be a problem when you are researching from a distance and only have access to either incomplete or limited records. However, that situation is improving all the time as more and more records appear on websites and other people on lists like this are willing to do look ups. Gill

    1. ROBERT HEATH & 1841 and 1851 CENSUS
    2. John Powley
    3. I have been away from this research for a while, and am not sure what correspondence and info there has been on these Census. If anyone is able, I would be grateful for a search for ROBERT HEATH in both. His second marriage was to Ellen NEWLAND at SELBORNE, in 1847 . One of the witnesses was John HEATH. I don't know of any children of the first marriage, or his wife's name. By 1851 Ellen was in Van Dieman' s Land, with baby daughter, Mary Ann Heath, who died a month after arrival there in 1850... I do not know his age at marriage, only that he was "an older man". . Ellen was about 21 when they married. I believe he was a carpenter. Thankyou very much to anyone who can help. Shirley (Australia)

    3. Were Michael and Eliza married by 1851? I've found a 23 year old unmarried Michael Baker living with his widowed mother Sarah in Hartley Wintney. His birthplace is shown as Hartley Row (Ref. 1. Re: [Ham] 1851 census
    2. Steven Sims
    3. Gill, I know you'll find this hard to believe, but people (men and women) did lie about their ages in the census - bear that in mind! I've found folk that only aged 5 or 6 years per census which is a good trick and I on;y wish I knew how to do it! Steve (forty-something-ish) Gill Jones wrote: > Thanks to all the people who responded to my query about the 1851 census. I'll investigate the various sources. > > In the meantime I would be grateful if Kathleen in Chicago could check the whereabouts of Ellen Bellinger. I thought I had found her baptism in 1837 in South Hayling but the 1861 census gives her age about 3/4 years younger (therefore about 1840/41) and lists Portsea as her birthplace. I was wondering whether there were two Ellen Bellingers in the area at the time. I thought the 1851 census might be able to clear this up as she would still presumeably have been living with her parents at the time. > Thanks > Gill > > > > ==== HAMPSHIRE Mailing List ==== > Genealogy is contagious and you don't have to sneeze to pass it on > >

The computer's swallowed grandma Yes' honestly' it's true She pressed 'control' and 'enter' And disappeared from view. Its devoured her completely The thought just makes me squirm Maybe she's caught a virus Or been eaten by a worm. I've searched through the recycle bin And files of every kind I've even used the internet But nothing did I find. In desperation I asked Jeeves My searches to refine The reply from him was negative Not a thing was found 'online'.
