    1. Re: [Ham] Flintshire
    2. Hi Gill - Many thanks for your kind offer. My great uncle's name was actually Francis Henry Halsey (Home) Dickson but in the army and his cricket career - he went by the name Harry Home. He would not be found on the 1881 census - as he was in South Africa fighting in the first Boer War. From there I believe he went to Preston with the army. Not clear where he was 1882-87 , thus my interest in whether he had been playing cricket in Flint County (Flintshire?) as mentioned in the reference I found about him being the only professional player hired to play for the amateur Ormskirk team.He was a bowler- played 12 seasons with Ormskirk 1887-1898.-"formerly of Flint County"... "was both successful and popular''...''paid 2 pounds per week plus a Benefit Match". I could not think of any other reason for him having been in Flint County - unless to play cricket , or if there was an army base there. He was with the the mounted infantry of the 1st Battalion Prince of Wales Leinster Regt. (109th Reg't - later 100th) from Birr , Ireland - later Preston. Would they ever have been stationed in Flint County? Have completely lost track of him after 1901 census where he was still in Ormskirk.. Can't even find a death notice for him. If you think you can help with any "Flint County/Flintshire connection" - I would appreciate it very much. regards Mary Margaret

    1. Flintshire
    2. Gill Jones
    3. Hi Mary Margaret I might be able to help you as I live in North Wales .. near the border with Flintshire. Ormskirk is quite close to Flintshire and so it is a reasonable possibility that he did live across the border at some point in his life. By the way, my UK atlas only lists a Flint (town) and a Flintshire (county) in Wales... none in Scotland or England. Do you have any further information about him as I do sometimes visit the Denbighshire Record Office (which also has the Flintshire records as the 2 counties were one administrative region until a few years ago). I checked the 1881 census just in case he was listed but the only Harry Home I found in Wales was living in Bedwelty Monmouth (South Wales) and born in Crickhowell, Brecknock (also South Wales) aged 17 and a railway porter. The only ones I found in Lancashire were:- Harry Home aged 4 living at Bolton-le-Sands and Harry Hume aged 1 living at Gorton, Manchester In answer to your query about cricket teams .. yes there were cricket teams in Flintshire in the 19th century. Let me know if I can help you with your quest. Gill

A BIG thank you to Linda and Tony, Edna, Peter, David and Alan for answering my question re "Where is Warsash" and "What Parish" Thank you very much for putting up with my stupidity; I was too hasty with my original question as I did find it in Google and Multimap. It was one of those 'senior moments' I seem to be getting a lot of lately. Thanks to all, Carole in Oz.

He went by the name Harry HOME. On the Census for 1891 and 1901 he is there - previously he was supposedly in "Flint County". Someone previously had suggested this was in "Flintshire "in Wales. However, sincei seeing this notice about the Flintshire Record Office - I am wondering if it was really this "Flintshire" he was from - (is it in Hampshire??) as his family did come originally from Southampton (Bitterne, Shirley, Millbrook) & Portsea. Would Flintshire be anywhere near these places? Unfortunately he would not have been on the 1881 census as he was in S.A. (Boer War) til about 1882 - then back to Preston for a while. Would there have been any amateur cricket teams in Flintshire he could have been playing for ? (In Ormskirk - he was the only paid professional on the amateur team there - he was a bowler.) 3. "Also, he would not have been in South Africa in 1881 for the Boer War - this event did not take place until the late 1890's." Not for the Second Boer War (the one we normally refer to as "the Boer War") -- but presumably he was there for the First Boer War (December 16, 1880 until March 23, 1881, according to Wikipedia). Best wishes, Peter McCaffery

    1. Boarders
    2. Hello Bob yes it is indeed possible that they could be husband and wife and they are isted as married on the census (ok not necessarily to each other) but does look like they were.: Hi Linda and Tony can you tell me if there are two people listed as boarders in a dwelling could they be man and wife and both be listed as boarders. I have in the 1901 a James WATERS listed as a boarder and also there is a Dinah WATERS listed as a boarder. Just some food for though there are usually 3 marriages to a page and the Portsmouth marriages for Sept 1/4 1900 only has 2 so maybe Dinah was one of the missing partners on that marriage block for BMD? Might be worth visiting Portsmouth Record Office or possibly if you e-mail them they might be prepared to check for you. Alternatively, you could go onto 1837 and check from 1894 until March 1/4 1901 to see if you can find a marriage match. Could there have been an alternative spelling for the marriage surname of WATERS? A few thoughts... Take care,Linda & Tony

    1. Re: [Ham] Harry Home (Was FLINTSHIRE RECORD OFFICE )
    2. Hello Margaret No, there is no connection between Hampshire & Flintshire which as you rightly say, is in Wales. The message about the Record Office ws posted for general information to save anyone on the list a wasted journey to Wales if perhaps they were pursuing their mobile Hampshire relatives. To try and help you though, the 1901 census for Harry ( professional cricketer living in Ormskirk) shows clearly he was born in Ireland. Also, he would not have been in South Africa in 1881 for the Boer War - this event did not take place until the late 1890's HTH Linda & Tony

    2. Alan McGowan
    3. Warsash was originally in the Parish of Titchfield. In 1872 it became part of the new parish of Hook with Warsash, which has its own parish registers dating from 1871. Another new parish, Locks Heath, was created in 1893 from parts of Hook with Warsash, Sarisbury, and Titchfield. 3. Hi Jean Harry and William Henry were both born in Milbrook and William Henry emigrated to Australia in around 1876-ish... He was a ship's carpenter and when the ship he was on stopped in Moreton Bay, he got off and made his way to Bundaberg and settled down. He married Pheobe Coleman and they had something like 11 children! 1. James Edward WATERS
    2. Hi all looking for any information on James Edward WATERS b 14 Jun 1841 Portsmouth. The last I have of him is on his daughter Sarah Elizabeth's marriage certificate in 1893, residence of daughter is 34 Kingston Crescent Portsmouth and he is listed as a Shopman. His wife died in the Portsmouth Workhouse 4 Jan 1894 so it could be possible that he went that way also. I cannot see anything of the family in any of the 1891/1901 Census. Regards Bob Newell
