    3. Hi Gail, I have lived in Havant all my life but was born in Portsmouth. I have been doing quite a bit of research into the Bible Christians in Portsmouth as my family were members. Looking at the original registers, there was a Reverend T. Couzens in the early 1800's also, I noticed several families who lived in places like Hayling who baptised there children in Portsea, here's one for an example: Bible Christian Portsea Mission Thomas, Son of George Cox, Mariner- parish of Hayling, county of Southampton and of Mary his wife, daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Beddell born 29 June 1830, baptised 12 September 1830 at Hayling. And another example: Eliza, daughter of John Smith of Titchfield, husbandman and Elizabeth daughter of Wm and Martha Cawte born 2 Oct 1834, baptised 19 Oct 1834 at her parent's house in the village of Curbridge in the parish aforementioned, by me Francis Martin. In 1812, at a special meeting held at Orange street Chapel, a William Couzens is mentioned as being one of the fifteen main subscribers. And in 1771 some members of the congregatrional church came from HAVANT, including a Mr Henry Crowsley, who then had his name struck through and a note added ; left his wife and family destitute!! Kind regards, Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gail Collins" <gcollins@vaxxine.com> To: <HAMPSHIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2005 6:39 PM Subject: [Ham] COUZENS - need help! >I am resending this query - seems it was sent before I finished what I >wanted to know because none of the baptisms & marriages are on the IGI. > > I have been working on my Couzen family tree. 3. I am resending this query - seems it was sent before I finished what I wanted to know because none of the baptisms & marriages are on the IGI. I have been working on my Couzen family tree. My 7 gg, John Couzens appears in Havant for sure with his burial 8 Oct 1701 but I do not know where John came from. His baptism/marriage is not on the IGI. ( I have the following generations down to the present.) My 6gg is John Cosens (& variants!) baptism is also not on IGI. He married Mary POLLINGTON 4 Sep 1699 at Portsmouth. Their 1st child is born in Havant 1702. So both father John and son John seem to first appear in Havant by 1701. Query 1 : Is Mary Pollington baptised in Portsmouth - is it possible to get b/m/d for 1670 - 1750? Query 2: Are there Couzens (and variants) also at Portsmouth/Portsea during the 1670's -1750's? It seems many people married at Portsea or Portsmouth but they are not from that parish. Do they usually marry in the wife's parish? Fingers Crossed - GAIL in Ontario Their 1st child is born in Havant 1702. So both father John and son John appear in Havant 1701. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Mike, N.D.A. stands for Naval Discipline Act. He spent his 28 days (less any remission time), for infringing some aspect of naval discipline at that time. Not sure when Royal Naval Detention Quarters Portsmouth came into being a separate entity, so the nearest local prison was probably used. For records you could try Portsmouth Museum/Record Office, they might be able to point you in the right direction if anything exists. Best wishes Anita Brown Michael Streeter <mchl_streeter@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: Great great grandfather, an Able Seaman, spent 28 days N.D.A. in Kingston Gaol in 1865. 1. 1. Petition to Tessa Jowell in support of Archives
    2. Edna
    3. If you haven't already done so please consider signing the petition. No need to discuss this on the list. Edna - Ottawa ~~~~~~~~~~~ STOP PRESS Due to the overwhelming response to the National Council on Archives' online petition, the collection date has been extended until 31st January 2006 to allow even more people to sign and for even more archives to get involved. Many thanks to all those people who have already signed and organised paper copies of the petition. The petition can be found at http://www.ncaonline.org.uk/announcements/save_the_countrys_memory The National Council on Archives will continue to lobby government and funding bodies to convince them that putting archives higher up the agenda is worthwhile. Chronic under-funding of archives means that some UK collections remain un-catalogued, housed in unsuitable conditions or unused. In the worst cases important archives are sold to overseas buyers. By signing this petition you will be helping to protect the nation's heritage and showing your support for archives. The petition will be sent to Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. If you would like to put a paper copy of the petition in your archive, please feel free to download materials and posters from http://www.ncaonline.org.uk/publications/reports and return them to NCA by 31st January 2006. Thank you for all your help.

    1. STUB(b)INGTON family from Droxford/Soberton/Newtown/Boarhunt/100 Acres
    2. Michael Davidson
    3. I'm looking for some help with reference to the STUB(b)INGTON marriages in and around DROXFORD. I am looking for any John STUBBINGTONs 1835 + or - 2 years, please? Likewise, a John or Charles SMITH married in Soberton/Newtown 1841 + or - 1 year, also a second marriage 1867 + or - 1 year. According to the 1851 census John SMITH married a Charlotte about 1841 and started to raise a family. 1851 census indicates five children. By the 1861 census he is a widower and his first name is Charles with just three sons with him. 1871 census (he is still Charles) and he is married again (with another Charlotte) with two sons from the first marriage and a 3 year old son from the second. 1881 and it is still Charles and Charlotte with six children from the second marriage and one son from the first. This family continues on in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. My difficulty is that John or Charles was born in France and had an earlier wife and children. His wife appears to have died in childbirth and because of persecution in the Alsace/Lorraine region, he and two earlier children moved to London. His French/German surname appears to have been SCHMITT. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Michael I tried sending this message a month or so ago but I think it must have got lost, so my apologies if it is duplicated.

    3. Hello, I'm visiting the list seeking help with my RALLS family from Dorset. John RALLS died at Pennington in 1857, and I believe his wife Elizabeth died in 1851. I am also interested in Charles PAUL who died in 1849 at Everton near Milford & his wife Sarah. What I would particularly like help with the burial and baptism registers for these two parishes - are there any transcriptions and if not is there anyone who is able to do a very brief lookup next time they are at the Hampshire Record Office. I am very willing to reciprocate with online types of lookup. Many thanks, Natalia Natalia A.
