    1. Christmas Greetings & Great New Year
    2. Victoria Moira Simmonds
    3. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May all your trees be Family and all your friends remember theirs. We are warm and wet after 4 weeks of Darn Cold Weather. The dogs are frantic as they are losing their snow they love to play in. They come in now dripping wet and their sides heaving. There is excitement in the air and parcels are inspected but not opened. Our gifts are stuffies and tennis balls for all five dogs. This is what happens when you get older and all the children are all over the place. We have become eccentric and peculiar. I am still faced with my Brick Walls and really need to travel to get past them. So my wish for you is that all your brick walls tumble and all the branches of your family tree be located. Bless you all, Moira Victoria Moira Simmonds Armstrong, B.C. Can. victoria@cnx.net WhiteHawk Clumber Spaniels www.fuzzyfaces.com/whitehawk1.html

    3. Hi Don Hayward I was just sorting through my email list deleting irrelevant ones when I came across your one to me dated 2/12/05. For some unknown reason I didn't open the attached family tree at the time. Apologies. Now I have seen it I have some comments/queries relating to it. 1. children of William Lane & Elizabeth Harding Warne - I had not previously come across Edith Harriet (Did she die in early childhood like Mary ann Elizabeth?) but I do have a Walter in this generation as well as the previous one (who I believe married Ellen Wiltshire) who you have not included. 2. William Richard Henry Lane was born 18/3/1868, and died 4/6/1948 Gosport 3. William Lane was born 22/6/1840 and married 30/5/1863 4. Mary Ann Storey died 1849 aged 38 and so must have been born about 1811but I don't know where she originally came from. 5. William Lane was born 27/8/1902, and died 8/12/1985 Aylesbury, Bucks Are you related to the Morris part of the tree? Gill

    3. Another thought- I recently heard of a lady in the 19th Century (gggrandmother of a friend) who suffered "post natal depression" but lived on to about sixty in an institution. Could your relative have had a child or a last child at the age of about 38 -otherwise the certifying doctor may have said that she suffered for around 20 years. To give a specific number of years the illness must have been attributable to a specific time or event, something of which the doctor was aware? Did she did at home? 3. I believe "certified " just means that a doctor had attended. My ggetc Timothy JOHNSON died in 1849 of "consumption, certified" and list replies I have had indicates that this means that a doctor certified his death... not a common procedure in those days. And my own query, what would "senile decay" mean? My ggetc Samuel WEBBER died in 1875 at a reported age of 84 (he was probably actually 80) of "senile decay" Now this is obviously old age BUT does it also imply alzheimers disease? 3. Hello, My great great grandmother died in 1870 of "general decay" aged just 39. She had had 6 children, the last a few months before her death but only two survived. The area she lived in was known for lead smelting and marshland - neither particularly good for the health. I was advised that in this context it could be a) a lazy doctor b) an unspecified disease process that the patient didn't recover from c) the doctor didn't know d) the doctor knew more than he was prepared to write down e) she was already badly rundown, caught a bug, curled up and died In her case I can't say I blame her if she'd lost the will to live - her husband was a difficult man. Even these days patients suffer illnesses that the medical establishment has problems diagnosing - the patient dies when heart, liver, kidneys or brain pack up. Not sure if that helps you but it adds a few more factors to consider. Happy Christmas, Natalia Natalia A. 3. Ho Everybody I have a John Trusler or Tusler allegedly born in Shipton, Hants c1802 who seems to have married an Eliza Williams in Shipton Bellinger in 1835. I can't find any reference to this marriage on the net doesn't matter what criteria or surname spelling I use. Any clues? Merry Christmas Peter Jones PS As a slight diversion, I keep saying 'Ho' to everyone at this time of year but no-one ever comments on it. Is that strange or just me?

    2. HO HO Peter, The Shipton Bellinger Parish Records are held at the Hampshire County Record Office. They are not likely to be on line unless they were filmed by IGI or an individual has transcribed them and put them on line. There are some early Marriages on Alan McGowan's excellent Hampshire site at http://website.lineone.net/~hantshistory. The village does not appear on Hugh Wallis's very useful site so it seems that IGI has not filmed them. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/ It might be worth an email to the Winchester Record Office to see if they can help. Happy Christmas plus a few more HO HO's, Jean in Hampshire

    1. Death certificate, "certified"
    2. Peter McCaffery
    3. Could it be, Judy, that Margaret Goodall had been certified insane when she was about 38? People in Britain were using "certified" as a synonym for "mad" quite a while ago, and the requirement that a person should not without a doctor's certificate be classified as insane dates back to the 18th century. In which year did she die? There was a big rise in the number of people certified insane during the course of the 19th century. Best wishes,

    2. Sorry didnt notice age at death. It would be a general term for what we would now call total systems failure or terminal entropy, heart pulmonary, circulation and kidney failure. maybe TB and pulmonary disease. Sounds as though she had been chronically ill for some time. Kidney failure was a common cause of death in the young in those days. Angela
