    3. Hi Alan I recently found out my Aunty married her husband twice. First non catholic and then about 9 months later they married again in a catholic church. She was a catholic and presumably wanted her daughter christened in the catholic church.. One of her daughters could not believe what I found!! So are the marriages in different faiths?? Interesting. The above probably does not apply in your case but is a reason for marrying twice. Ha ha Season's Greetings to all from a wonderful summer down here. The first time was on July 6th 1845 @ the Parish Church of alverstoke (Sept Quarter Volume 7 Page 31) on the certificate for this marriage his wife Ann Jones nee Cleverley uses her widows name of Jones. Now nine years later on September 4,1854 @ Alverstoke Register Office (Sept Quarter volume 26 page 629) they seem to tie the knot again, although this time Ann sign in as Ann Cleverley. The major difference in the details of the certificates is Thomas's age is out by six years as he would have been 62 in 1854 and not 56 as shown on the second certificate. At face value there seems to be no reason to go through another wedding , but I would like any suggestion or opinions that might explain this occurance? Can I wish you all a very Happy New Year. 3. On the matter of his age, FreeBMD lists a death of a Thomas FOXALL in 1871 (Jun qtr) Alverstoke. The age stated is 79 making his dob as 1792 which would agree with his age in 1854 as 62. This of course was the age given by the person who reported the death, so could easily be in error. Have you checked the censuses 1851-71? He should appear in them as his time in the Navy probably expired in the early 1830's. As to the marriage;as a naval pensioner, he may have applied to be an "out-pensioner" of Greenwich (he was of an age and all seaman paid 6d a month towards the upkeep of the Hospital, so he could have been eligible) and needed a marriage certificate. Having lost the original and not knowing how to acquire a copy, they married again, possible deliberately misstating his age to prevent any discovery, a lie that they would probably repeat in the Censuses and his death certificate. Am I reading to many mystery books? Hi Lynda Thanks for those thoughts, it certainly possible although I do have FMD and Parish Record data (no certificates) for the husbands death in 1841 and the marriage of Ann and her husband in 1827. Many thanks for your help Alan Foxall Lynda Ahmad <lynda@ahmad1.freeserve.co.uk> wrote: A few thoughts: Could there have been something technically wrong with the first marriage which they put right by having the second (perhaps Thomas' age being wrong)? Or was it even possible that she never married her first husband and was therefore not technically a widow for the 1845 wedding? 3. Hi Linda & Tony Yes both the Fathers match on both certificates. Regarding the vows that what I oringally thought, but the first wedding was in Church and the second in the Register Office, so I tend to thing that is unlikely. The only other thought is that they got divorced and the re-married, but as a Seaman I would not have thought they had the money for that.
