    1. [HAM] Missing from GRO Index - original registration ?
    2. Francis Payne
    3. My g-g-grandfather John Payne (d 17/6/1908 at Highcliffe) is not in the GRO death index. He would have been reg at Christchurch. There is a birth of John Payne in the same qtr and a death of Jane Payne (correct age of 73) in the same qtr, both reg at Christchurch. Assuming these are not him, and he has been left out of the index, how would I go about obtaining the details from the original registration office ? Many thanks. Regards Francis Auckland, NZ

    3. Hi, If it was me, I would write to Christchurch Registry Office with the details I have got to see if they have got the correct death registered in their books. As Bernie says, the GRO books and index are compiled from these local books. If an error was made when these quarterly returns were put together, John could easily have become Jane. Since you have the date and place of death, it should be a simple job for them to check. Best wishes, Sarah
