I believe the National Archives service records only start from 1873 as far as on line records are concerned from the web site it says the Certificates of service are in ADM records from 1802 are held there and available in the original form, the have a microfilm alphabetical index which give the certificate numbers so you will need someone to go there for you if you can't go yourself. Paying a researcher is a good idea but often not an option for some and then you have to make sure they are reputable there have been a few who have made up stories in the past but mostly about much older ancestors. I have been told the best thing is to seek the recommendation of the local Family History Society unless you know someone who has used one. I was lucky I found distant cousins through Genesreunited and the Roots county list who had done a lot of hands on work and were kind enough to share details and documents with me but I still went back,- I have direct family members there did some research but it is time consuming,. met some of my helpful cousins and visited the villages where my ancestors came from, which was an experience standing in a 1500's inn knowing my 9th great g/g probably used it, I wouldn't have missed it for anything Irene ----- Original Message ----- From: "liverpud" <[email protected]> To: "Hampshire-L" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 29, 2008 1:05 AM Subject: [HAM] [PORTSMOUTH-GOSPORT] Greenwich Pensioners & MIDLANE > Hi, > > Researchers: I had three of my naval grandparents searched & paid a > researcher. I think my 6g-grandparents may be Joseph Keeping & Alice Pack who married at Milton 23/5/1763. IGI has extracted entries which have Alice's parents as Thomas Paik and Alice Footner m 26/12/1734 and Alice bap 4/3/1707. I wonder if anyone else is interested in these families ? Any comments really appreciated. Regards Francis Auckland, NZ
My 5g-grandfather is Charles Chater/Cheater and I think his parents could be Charles & Ann Philpot who married at Fordingbridge 30/8/1763. I wonder if anyone has an interest in these families. Any comments really appreciated. Regards Francis Auckland, NZ
I wonder if ayone has an interest in this family. My 5g-grandmother is Elizabeth Penn who married Charles Chater at Breamore in 1792. I think she is the daughter of John & Hannah Francis m 1773 at Breamore. Any comments really appreciated. Regards Francis Auckland, NZ
I have discovered that John KINGSTON who worked in Portsmouth Dockyard for a while was married to a Mary. On the IGI, I found a John KINGSTON who married a Mary GRANT in Portsea on 18 September 1808. this couple possible had three children: William born 1810 baptised 24 August 1811 at St Mary's Portsea Mary Tucker KINGSTON baptised 27 December 1818 at St John Portsea James Tucker KINGSTON baptised at the same time as Mary. Does anyone have anything further on this family? Clues might be witnesses to the wedding or the Father's occupation. John KINGSTON was the brother of William KINGSTON who was a master Millwright at Portsmouth Dockyard and I am trying to discover if this was the right John. Any information would be extremely helpful. Many thanks Jean PS I have checked the Knightroots site but couldn't find anything. Hi Carol, In an attempt to help I did a check with Royal Mail online to establish the postcode, then tried BT online. The full postal address is as follows, however there was no listing for your Stephens with BT. That may mean that the number is ex-directory, or perhaps there are no telephone connections available in a mobile home park. Of course he may not be there at all. 41 King Edward Mobile Home Park Baddesley Road North Baddesley SOUTHAMPTON SO52 9JU I haven't helped much but at least you have a postal address to write to if you want to take that route. Hi, Researchers: I had three of my naval grandparents searched & paid a researcher. By the time one fiddles, it's best to have someone look at Kew. I know it's pricey but cheaper than airfare, B&B etc. Good Luck, Edna - sunny Ottawa --- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sarah Middleton" <[email protected]> I have found the following ancestor: John MIDLANE, born abt 1793, Brading, Isle of Wight. By 1815, he was in Portsea. In 1823 he was described as a Mariner. On the 1851 census, he is a Greenwich Pensioner, and in 1861, shortly before he died, he was a Carpenter and Joiner (Naval Pension). I believe that there should be a record of his naval service and being a Greenwich pensioner, and that these are held by The National Archives. I have tried searching their website, but I find it quite complicated and haven't come up with any results that could be him. Am I looking in the right place? Can anyone help me find out about his service or pension? Is anyone else researching the name MIDLANE?
