    3. Hello David I was in contact some time ago who thought my Southampton-area Thomases might be connected to his, but we never made a link - that was before I knew about Elizabeth Thomas born c1786 in Boldre. The one on your list, she married William Harding in Boldre in 1809, he was born in Whiteparish, Wiltshire. They are my ggg.grandparents. The Fawley connection interests me greatly - children in my Thomas family were sent there to live with relatives after their mother was confined to an asylum; their father went to London where my Thomas g.grandparents had already settled. Thank you very much for sending the other names on the list, I shall certainly look into them in greater depth, always assuming I don't get blown away by our terrible gales beforehand! Best wishes Margaret On Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 8:37 PM, david dowd <[email protected]> wrote: > Dear Margaret, > have you looked at Beaulieu or Fawley? 3. Is anyone else out there researching the THOMAS family of Boldre? I have the following: Elizabeth THOMAS born c1789 in Boldre Married 12 August 1809 in Boldre William HARDING born c1782 in Whiteparish, Wiltshire. Elizabeth and William were my 3 x g.grandparents. I am particularly interested because Elizabeth's granddaughter (my g.grandmother) married Charles Edward THOMAS - possibly no connection, but I've never been able to find the parents of Charles's grandfather William THOMAS (born c1791), or even a definite birthplace for him. Grateful for any possible connections. Margaret

The first two are still in fairly common usage, preceded by the name of the district, e.g. [Place] Urban District Council, but the USD has generally been discontinued. 3. R.D. - Rural District U.S.D. - Urban Sanitary District U.D. - Urban District All of these acronyms refer to the type of sub-division of government services but someone from England could explain it much better than I. You have rural districts, urban districts and boroughs in Hampshire as the basic governing unit. For instance Andover is both a borough and a rural district. That surprised me as I thought that Andover would be a borough and have an Urban district but perhaps the Urban district is part of the borough in that case (already regional government in place). >From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_sanitary_district Sanitary Districts were established in England and Wales in 1875 and in Ireland in 1878. The districts were of two types, based on existing structures: Urban sanitary districts in towns with existing local government bodiesRural sanitary districts in the remaining rural areas of poor law unions. Each district was governed by a sanitary authority and was responsible for various public health matters such as providing clean drinking water, sewers, street cleaning, and clearing slum housing. In England and Wales, both rural and urban sanitary districts were replaced in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 by the more general rural districts and urban districts. A similar reform was carried out in Ireland in 1899 by the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898. 2. Hi Sharon, I'm certain that there was a certain elasticity in people's ages. In some cases they might been around too long for them to remember ( wasn't that polite?!). In the case of deaths, the people reporting them were not related to the bodies so guessed. People eager to get married ???? so upped their age. In the case of lodgers their landlord just guessed. It most certainly is not a good yard stick to rely on. Anyway, nobody said it would be easy (this family tree thing), Trust it all worked out in the end Regards - Anthony ---- "Moss wrote: > > I have this happening to me as well right now!
