My solution is to write anyway and ask them to reply via e-mail so you can establish a contact with them and then you can take it from there. I can send a letter to Oz with two stamps and you can go to the post office there and get a international stamp to use for SAS letters ..I have done it several times..and sometimes they have returned them along with the information requested..People who do genealogy are great at sharing..but it is a two way street.. G'day Edna In the Rhondda when someone was to be buried at a municipal cemetery, there was an interment notice posted at the gate or at the sexton's office giving all the details of the death. Perhaps the Midhurst Council (or its successor) has this sort of record. The local library, again in the Rhondda, has the archives for these notices and is willing to look up details for relatives or researchers at no cost the last time I asked for help. Again, perhaps the Midhurst Council will perform the same service. Regards Ray Lewis Hazelmere Western Australia liverpud wrote: > My great-grandfather <snipped>

Rose Edna already has the death certificate and is after the burial details. Hi, Finally I found my plumber from Portsea, and received his death certificate. He died 23 May 1894 Midhurst from fracturing his head jumping from his van. He lived at Midhurst Common so thought he might have been interred nearby. Burials for that period not covered in the LDS catalogue. Hi everyone Thanks for your various advice. Went to PO and have bought a few IRCs. Normal air mail stamp Aust-UK is $AU2 and the IRC cost $AU2.40 so hopefully that will be sufficient coverage for postage Appreciate your help Meegan
The problem with having someone send stamps is that I don't believe you can mail a letter in Canada with an English stamp. Hi I found a G.R.O. for a Emily Emery Dec. Qtr. 1855 Westminster 1a 258, perhaps you could look at the page no. as it isn't very clear on Ancestry. Then if this is the right one you would discover the parents. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Margaret Usmar Sent: 01 April 2008 19:49 To: [email protected] Subject: [HAM] EMERY Many thanks to everyone who has helped me with the EMERY family of Havant. I'm at risk of being accused of pedanticism here, but as a geographer and regular visitor to the area I was surprised at Tony's estimate (and I am not impuning Tony's encyclopaedic knowledge, which I freely acknowledge in the field of local family history, but it happens that historical-geographical research is one of my specialisms), so I measured it by triangulation (so we are talking about straight lines) - the direct distance across Portsmouth harbour, Portsea Island and Langstone Harbour, between the parish church in Alverstoke and the Town Hall in Havant is 8.7 miles (14 Km); the rough route of the 'old' road is approximately 21 miles (34 Km). My own relatives at this time were quite regularly walking distances in excess of this because of the nature of their work (Ag.Labs), and the area between Alverstoke and Havant at the time of Nelson would have largely been rural, punctuated by military/naval installations - so not the continuous urban sprawl of today but not too far between settlements- although I do take Tony's point that this would not mean that Havant and Alverstoke would have been regarded as 'the same area' as each other. People tend to think of geographical features as boundaries of 'home areas' -in the case of Alverstoke, as with Gosport, the natural boundaries are defined by the peninsular and the downs to the North; Havant's boundries would have been defined by the coastal plain, the harbours and the forested areas in the North, North-west and the Downs. In reality the local economic traditions would be defined by their geography and this would also deferentiate Alverstoke and Havant. I have sent a number of letters to England with an IRC enclosed. One of the people was kind enough to let me know that one IRC is not sufficient to cover the postage of a letter to Canada, two are required - i.e. $7.00 CDN. Now I get a £5 note from the bank (or friend) about $10 CDN and send that. The actual postage is only 69p - so I am covered for a considerable number of letters with the person. If it works out that there is only one letter, I instruct the person to use the extra for postage on letters to other people. A small loss for me, but at least it covers the letters and the postoffice does not rip me off. Hi David Thanks for your suggestions. Following Patsy's tips I have now located the Connor family in 1841 and 1851, misspelled, as CONNORS and CONNER. Interesting that your CORNER came from Sussex and I now know that JAMES CONNOR was born in Hastings, Sussex. Another coincidence is that you have an interest in the name COUSINS and my JAMES CONNOR married MARY ANN COUZENS (also spelled COUSINS, COUSENS, COZINS amongst others) in 1817 in Fareham. Is it possible there is a link here somewhere? Yvonne
Thanks for the tip, Patsy. I tried your suggestions and they worked for me on Ancestry. I can now see why I could not find AMOS as he was indexed as ANN! Appreciate your help. Yvonne
According to www.royalmail.co.uk IRC are £0.95 here but now have an expiry date of about 3 years There is a shop on the website where you buy UK stamps at face value and overseas postage is £2.15 for small orders. The website will also explain the value of stamps needed to post back to where you live. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Parker > Sent: 01 April 2008 20:10 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [HAM] IRC = SAE > > In Canada an International Reply Coupon costs $3.50.
