Hello, I'm brand new to the list in order to pursue a family story with few details: Betty and Jane were possibly sisters or 1/2 sisters of a foremother (grand/great/ggrandmother?). They were employed by Winchester Cathedral as cooks. Now whether that meant they worked in the bishop's home...I'm not sure. Anyway, the story is that there was fat on the floor of the kitchen, one of the sisters fell, hit her head on the floor, and suffered brain damage. The Cathedral was kind enough, because she could no longer work, to provide her with a pension the rest of her life with the other sister providing care. I inquired of the librarian at the Cathedral if there was written record of this. It seems that a long term pension might certainly be fairly easy to find and he agreed to look. I followed up with another email about a year later and got no response. So, for whatever reason, he is unable/unwilling to assist. Can anyone give me any ideas how to follow up? Who to ask? (I am unable to pursue in person.) I have no idea as to time frame and since I don't know their last names, I have only the clues stated above. Thank you for any assistance, Pam Spooner, formerly of King's Lynn, Norfolk now in Texas [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Hi, You cant trace Mary Ann through B.M.D. as they don't start until 1837. But she is on the I.G.I. Mary Ann Norgrave born 1821 Hursley and died 31.10.1912. 1841 she was in Malmesbury Wilts, 1861,1871 1881 and 1891 in Ludlow Shropshire. I occasionlly take out a subscription, especially when they offer a special deal. It is well worth the outlay, as coverage on the free sites I have used is not extensive. If, like me, you do not live in the area you are researching, findmypast is an absolute boon. Go for it ! Vicki

I used the pay per view for the passenger list, that was very good as the image gave me name, age, previous address, occupation, destination, and as one of my relatives was just visiting the country, the name and address where they stayed. BMD will not give you any more information then free bmd, you still need to purchase original. Census is the same, the information is the same as Freecen, the only difference if you can't access a free census then it is helpful, you get a full image. Depending on area you are searching it is possible to find free census online ie Dorset OPC have from 1841 - 1901. I found the cost of pay per view a little expense as I could only get a couple of images per cost. It is 30 units for 1 passenger image. Hope this helps Rose ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moss, Sharon ENV:EX" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, April 11, 2008 5:09 AM Subject: [HAM] Findmypast > Hi everyone, > > Sorry for posting on a county list, but I just wanted to know if anyone > uses & suscribes (via pay per view or other) to findmypast.com. Hi Amanda, Many thanks for the info on James and Henrietta, it's a real gem. From what you have told me about your research, you have the correct info for the Jordan family. I will put some further info together for you over the next couple of days, if thats ok with you. I am going through the Hampshire Bishops Transcripts at the moment for you, to see if there is anything about Frederick & Emma Sweetingham etc. Will be in touch soon. It is unlikely that a birth in 1798 would be recorded as being in Redhill Surrey, that's the one about eight miles from Epsom, because it didn't exist back then. It began life as a stop on the London to Brighton railway to serve Reigate which is about a mile away. The registration district would have been Reigate or East Surrey. I am unable to find a Redhill in Hampshire, although there is a Redhill Farm near Godshill on the Isle of Wight! Hawley is near Blackwater, which is near Camberley. In Blackwater there is an area called Frogmore Park. Vicki
Hi Kate My research came about because I was investigating not my family but the name of my then local pub - The Drummond Arms. The research included visits to Winchester, Southampton and Portsmouth local studies libraries and the respective archives, the private archives of the Drummond family at Cadland, and with input of wills and other matters from others who were coincidentally researching for other reasons and approaching from different directions. The object family are the Drummonds, although the particular twig of the branch that was my primary focus was the 'black sheep' that must not be mentioned in polite society. Personally, I believe the story is quite moving and reflects the absolute hypocrisy that existed in society. However, these all seem to have had reasonably happy outcomes - as a good story should. The contact families, who had no direct bearing but came up in research included the Jenkinson's (of whom the Earl of Liverpool was the prominent member) included because of property transactions in the New Forest; the Hans Sloane family (included because of mutual business with the Anglo-Persian Oil company that lead to the construction of both Fawley oil refinery and the railway line that serves waterside)whose family owned Paultons and other parcels of land around Totton and other bits of real estate such as Sloane Square. Through marriage the family were related to many titled families but not usually from Hampshire (Manners, Seymour, Percy, Somerset and others). Of other local families they were married into the Humphrys, of whom William Charles Humphrys, JP was the Chairman of the Southampton Coke and Gas company and who had a town house where the Civic Square currently is in Southampton as well as his main house in Bursledon, where he was de facto squire. The Maturin family who were Protestant Irish and included the Vicar of Lymington, Physicians and Surgeons with bases in Fawley, Hartley Wintney and the Army Medical Service (later Royal Army Medical Corps). The Drummonds were of the family who owned Drummonds Bank (now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland) and were expatriate Scots whose forebears were active in the Stuart cause and indeed lost members of the family in or because of Culloden. I'm unsure whether this answers your question, but it does give you a flavour of some of the connections. He was a blacksmith and they had at least three children: Charlotte, born abt 1814; Thomas, born abt 1815 and Harriet, born abt 1817. As far as I know they were not both from Hursley, and the IGI seems to have people of these names being married at St Michaels' Southampton or at Romsey - I have not yet found them in the parish records and have only very limited time to dedicate to the search. I have a great deal of interesting information about Charlotte and her much later marriage, her 18 children and the fact that she ended up with the daughter of a Duke and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland as an in-law (husband's sister-in-law) , and the sister of Britain's only assassinated Prime Minister as a mother-in-law. It is interesting that the family, one of Hampshire's leading families, effectively disowned the couple but came, in time, to recognise the connection with at least a couple of their children in a bequest from one of the dowagers. If you have a connection, then please let me know - I can find you all sorts of interesting connections to this lady. I also know that about twenty odd years ago, some of her descendants were looking around trying to identify her. I have tried finding them, but I fear that they too have now passed away.
