Many thanks to all who replied re Wills, with your very helpful information. In particular, to Alan McGowan for pointing me to the Hants archive online catalogue. Unfortunately, the Will for John Heatrell is not listed here but at least I know where to go in the future if another such situation occurs. Thanks again. Yvonne in Wales

Hi, In view that I have found my Great-grandfather, William James Hellyer (1854-1894) born Gosport, died Midhurst Sussex & buried Bepton, thought someone might like this one -- 1891 Census 6096027, St. Michaels RG12 Piece 0917 Folio 108 fiche #3, Pg 38: William Hellyer age 37 living as a single Lodger at 2 Pepper Alley, b. Southampton. Occupation - Ships Foreman? (very faint). Edna - Ottawa
Hampshire wills are described at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives/hals-collections/wills.htm Wills proved in Hampshire 1571-1858 can be searched on-line. Go to http://www3.hants.gov.uk/archives/catalog.htm Click on Start your search here Type a name (or surname) in the Any Text field Type will in the Title field Click Search - at the bottom of the screen Alan McGowan >> I am wondering whether any kind person might have access to the Hampshire Will Index 1571-1858, which I understand is on Microfiche at the Hants Record Office, who might be willing to look up this reference for me? Am I right in thinking it might give more information on the deceased and the executrix? Failing this, would my best bet be to ask the Record Office to undertake a search of the Will for me? All advice gratefully received. Yvonne in Wales
Prior to 1858, the responsibility for wills lay with the Anglican church but in that year passed to the State. It was only then that the National probate Index was established and is the reason why the HRO NPI is not dated earlier - because there is no earlier index. The pre 1858 Hampshire wills are indexed on fiche at the HRO with the actual documents on microfilm there. In addition, wills can be downloaded from Documents Online at the National Archive web site ( the Public Record Office changed its name a few years back!) but is not yet complete. Hi, Sarson is in Andover sub district Amport Val -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Kate Burhouse Sent: 14 April 2008 11:35 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [HAM] Sarson, where is it? please Ooogh! I know this because I used to live there!!! Well, in Sarson Close, Amport, just west of Andover. If you put Sarson Close or SP11 8AB into any of the map sites (e.g. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tab=wl ) you'll be able to see where it is and an aerial photo. The houses built on the site now were originally built by the council probably about 1930/40s, but are now nearly all privately owned. This site also has information - http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/hantsgaz/hantsgaz/HGANDX_F.HTM and this site has maps of all different eras - this one is of 1826 and shows Sarson a little further over than where Sarson Close is today. http://www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/hantsmap/hantsmap/grnwood2/grw45.htm If you want photos of the area, take a look at http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/SU3044?nl=1 although there aren't any of Sarson Close specifically - the village of Amport is very pretty. Hi Edna You're right - it's a brilliant site. Especially the street directories section. Well worth checking out if anyone has relatives that live(d) in Southampton. Does anyone have any BROWNEs in or around Lymington in the early 1800's please ? I am especially looking for a William Henry BROWNE, b. abt. 1810, with father William Joseph BROWNE (builder). I originally thought my family came from Salford, but have been told there is a link to Hampshire. Grateful for any suggestions. Geoff Browne,

I also had problems last year with an enquiry but it turned out that the reason was Mr Hardacre had retired through ill-health, and Jo Bartholomew had only just been appointed as Curator on 1st November. She said it may take her a little time as she was not yet familiar with procedures and archives there. Try again. I eventually received a very full reply from a Cathedral Guide. Hi, A good site.... http://www.plimsoll.org/ Edna - Ottawa
Amport is a parish within the hundred of Andover - originally known as simply Anne in the 11th century but Anneport by the 15th.C. At the start of the 20th century there were large stretches of woodland in the southern part of the parish - one of these being Sarson Wood. Sarson itself was a tithing in the parish of Amport and had also been known as Ann Savage and Soresdene. The VCH mentions that there were 2 water mills at Sarson. Hope this helps Linda & tony -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Fionnghal Sent: 14 April 2008 04:31 To: [email protected] Subject: [HAM] Sarson, where is it? please For FREE online parish register transcriptions visit the Hampshire OPC at www.knightroots.co.uk ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

I am researching the surname CRANHAM from Hawley in Hampshire. Stephen Cranham married Judith KELSEY in 1816. They had four sons: John, Charles, William and George. John Cranham Married Elizabeth Reynolds from Yateley, although the marriage took place at St Clement Dane in Westminster. They had about 7 children, the youngest of whom was FREDERICK CRANHAM, born 1855. Does anyone have any information on the above? Christine
