    3. Sounds interesting Terri. I have family that came from Hampshire (Fleet, Hartney Witney, Crookham) and settled here in Victoria, BC, but I do not have a website set up (as of yet...actually, never even occurred to me to do so!). Is there any spot for information like that? Maybe just names and who's researching them and contact info? 1. Re: [HAM] Trigg and Prater Families
    2. david dowd
    3. Dear Diane, I've done a little bit of research on the family for a distant relative. Some of this may even be relevant! A) The Gatehouse at Ashford Chase, Steep, is a Grade II Mansion built in 1912 by W F Unsworth, with garden architecture by architect Inigo Trigg B) Re: Harry Inigo TRIGG, the Edwardian garden designer, try to get hold of "Country Life" (where would I be without it?) - the 26.10.1995 edition had 4 colour pages on his 'stuff' - there's a copy being auctioned on e-Bay and stands at £3.49 (inc.) at the moment. He wrote "The Art of Garden Design in Italy" in 1906 and his illustrations formed the basis for many gardens in this country. The Hundred of Trigg (also known as Triggshire) in Cornwall centred around Port Isaac. Don't know if the name is pure coincidence. Trigg County in Kentucky was named after Stephen Trigg, a frontiersman who died in the Batlle of Blue Licks. There are live downloads from CCTV cameras situated at Trigg Point and Trigg Beach in Western Australia www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/coastaldata/1738.asp, so there were probably Trigg persons there long ago. C) Triggs of Alfold (Surrey) Uriah Balchin of Whites Farm was Churchwarden from 1799- 1804. His son Henry became a churchwarden in 1819-32. Henry's nephew, James Balchin, who ran the Three Compasses inn, just up the road from the hall by the entrance to Dunsfold Aerodrome (yes, I know it wasn't there then), was also involved in parish affairs, and his signature can often be seen in the rate book. Other Balchins who had dealings with raising the rates to run the parish were John TRIGG, the husband of Maria Balchin (sister of James Balchin above), and their son George TRIGG. The Trigg family graves can be seen just outside the North porch. (George) "Trigg's Rules of Grammar" (pub.1979) - If you wish to improve your English, do NOT use this list of rules - it's humorously designed to break the very rules it lays down. Australian Trigg - Trigg Beach, Island, and Point in Western Australia, were named after Henry TRIGG - there's a biography called "Man of energy and compassion: The life, letters, and times of Henry Trigg, Swan River pioneer and church founder" by Bruce Devenish. Tales of Bygone TRIGGs No. 2: Henry Trigg, a Hertfordshire grocer, was both wealthy and eccentric, owning considerable property within and around the town of Stevenage. One night, after a bout of alcoholic celebrations with two of his colleagues, his route home took him by way of the local churchyard. Attracted by noise and the sight of flickering lights coming from within the church grounds they made their way to the surrounding wall and peered over. They were somewhat disturbed by what they saw .... 'resurrectionists' about their nefarious business. These were in fact bodysnatchers, removing the remains of the newly buried for sale as research items to surgeons and students training at medical school. The sight had such an effect on the three friends that they all made a pact that they would take suitable steps to ensure that such a fate did not befall their cadavers after their own individual deaths. Henry, for his part, bequeathed all his earthly wealth to a hierarchy of people each one being offered it in turn. There was a condition however. His body had to be laid to rest within the purlins (rafters) of the recipient's hovel (barn) After his death in 1724 his brother, The Rev Thomas Trigg, put aside any scruples that he may have had and agreed to fulfil Henry's request. The remains were duly sealed in a coffin and placed in full view in the appointed location. And there they remain until today ......or do they? In her will of 1769 his niece Ann left the sum of forty shillings to provide her uncle with a decent burial. There is no record however which shows that this was ever done. In 1774 the house became the Old Castle Inn and the barn (and presumably its occupant) escaped a series of disastrous fires in the area. In 1831, a new landlord Mr Bellamy, took over. His first task was to inspect the coffin. Henry, he confirmed, was still inside (What happened then to Anne's forty shillings?). A further check was made in 1906 when members of the East Hertfordshire Archaeological Society were allowed access to it. Their report shows that the coffin contained about two thirds of a human skeleton. Is he still there now then? It would appear not. During the first world war soldiers were stationed in the area. Several were reported to have plundered the coffin taking home bones as souvenirs. It was also reported that some soldiers sold on some bones to the local populous as trinkets. It would appear therefore that, despite all his precautions, poor old Henry finally fell foul of his dreaded bodysnatchers In 1917 a lady reported that she, along with two of her friends, made a nocturnal visit to the coffin. They found a small hole on the base into which they put their hands. Groping inside they removed bones which subsequently turned out to belong to a horse. The coffin still remains in situ in the rafters of a building now owned by the National Westminster bank, at 37 High Street, Old Stevenage D) Cambridgeshire Melbourne (Cambs., not Oz) 1) All Saints Church Monument to Thomas TRIGG, 1819 2) British School (or Trigg's Charity) 1855, supported from property left by John TRIGG & William Ayloff esqrs. Hampshire Ecchinswell John TRIGG married Julia GROOMBRIDGE of London, about 1892. Children: Ada (1890), John (1893), William (1895), George (1898), Arthur (1900) Wickham, St. Nicholas TRIGG surname in index to Parish Magazine for 1900 (on CD) Kent Aylesford, Ss Peter & Paul John TRIGG married Mary BISHOP here 11.12.1729 Sutton at Hone, churchyard inscriptions 1. Mr John TRIGG of this Parish died 29 November 1825 aged 8(?5). Mrs Mary TRIGG his wife died 11 February 1810 aged 75. 2. Mrs Sarah TRIGG wife of Mr John TRIGG of this Parish died 18 September 1819 aged 49 (probably dtr-in-law of above). That's all I have, hope something is of interest, Regards, David

    3. There is an LDS marriage for John Welch and Martha Gray 19 Jan 1836 All Souls, Saint Marylebone, London is this your couple. In the 1841 John and family are in St Pancras, but still no clue as to where he was born as it does not give a birth place only if he was born in the parish which he was not.
